Microsoft Windows: Vista (Longhorn/Windows 6.0)

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

Microsoft Windows: Vista (Longhorn/Windows 6.0)

Post by Kaylee » Sat Aug 06, 2005 9:47 pm

new website up at www.microsoft.com/vista

It's looking very sharp, a tightened up version of XP from the looks of it (as I said when I testdrove the alpha version). It looks like all traces of palladium and the Windows filesystem have been relegated to 'maybe' add-on packs rather than foundation corner stones.

It's a shame in some ways as redesigning the system around security and stability would be a good move imo rather than always tacking it on to a modified existing system which was designed for ease of use- obviously Microsoft can't afford to spend years building/testing their products tho, there comes a point where they just have to ship them and start getting money back.

I'm liking the new search facilities and the concept of virtual folders (presaved searches which look just like folders), although I wonder how much power they're going to consume. The better performance ratings than XP are also encouraging, tho I would imagine thats only on top of the line hardware.

As for the rest of it, it's catchup with Firefox, Linux and Apple. Generally pretty encouraging tho. Hopefully it won't be long before they introduce a 64bit version (I'm shortly moving into the 64bit world :)).

Anyone want to download and test out the new beta version? ;)

A friend of mine has already done that at work.

He found that the system was more stable when upgraded from XP than from a fresh install.

No problem.

Btw, it does look spiffy, although you may think you have colour problems when you see the monochrome startup screen. :D

Nah. The alpha version was still called Longhorn, and it didn't take to our machines at all.

theres always XP 64 if u need a 64bit OS

Vista looks good - but like i say, ive never had a problem with XP.

as for power, 95 was hungry,so was 98 and so was XP but computers naturally got faster so i think its irrelevent how much power it uses.

MS have a huge market in upgrades, in terms of end-user software sales for their OS's they sell infinitely more upgrades than full-versions.

Don't forget, a lot of businesses are still using NT 4 :) Upgrading is a lucritive market.

yer that they do, but if MS want to really make money they can't just target brand new computers they have to make sure that the system can run all its swanky features at a reasonable speed on existing ones too. upgrades bring in money too n_n

definitely- same way they've dropped Palladium and the new file system, they just can't fit them in and have the product out in a timely manner on budget.

Virtual folders is a very neat idea, tho it's something that will inevitably be available under Linux before hand :D

I might be adventurous and give the beta version a spin.

It's looking pretty cool :) Also looks like they've got rid of the sidebar, which I honestly thought was useless.

I do want to hear more about the digital rights media, certainly when they were discussing Palladium the idea seemed to be coming across that the system would decide what I could/couldn't install and run (i.e. no pirate software, no multiregion DVDs in a locked region DVD player, no unsuitable material all that sort of weirdness). I'm hoping most of that has gone along with Palladium...
