That's.... ...rather surprising. I wasn't expecting that at all. I rather enjoy that look to be absolutely, no ********, honest. Very Zone Of Enders-esque in design. Me gusta. Too bad I don't collect comics anymore, not that it would really matter in this case though, as Professor Smooth pointed out.
Muchas gracias to Mob for the Sig, proving why he's called 'King'.
The "i" in "Señior" from "Señior's Covenant" is intentional and part of a stupid & cheesy inside joke from '02. Thank you for your concern.

as much as its a nice bit of art work, it doesnt say 'Iron man' to me, its just some Zone of the enders mech which ive seen a zillion times. I dont see how thats Iron man.
Personnaly if I was remaking iron man id go more Retro then anything, streamline the design but add some nice details.
thats just a mech suit, it could be anything, if I wrote ZoE on the top as a title you wouldnt know the difference.

I've been off that bus for about, oh, when did Age of Apocalypse finish?Brendocon wrote:...so I'm not really In Da Loop.

Basically, The Scarlet Witch screws up reality. Mutants rule, humans are 2nd class citizens, Magneto's in charge of the Earth (or something). It's an 8 issue mini-series with a couple of spin-offs. It's not as huge as Age of Apocalypse (or even Onslaught). Though Marvel's hyped it up to be the biggest thing in comics history. When reality goes back to "normal" there will probably be a couple of changes (deaths and rebirths, probably) to continuity.Brendocon wrote:What is this whole House of M stuff anyway? I've gathered it's some sort of Marvel Universe crossover thing... but is there an actual plot to it?
Exiles and Astonishing are the only Marvel comics I buy these days, so I'm not really In Da Loop.
On the other hand, DC's huge crossover (Infinite Crisis) is shaping up to actually BE teh greatest thing in comics history.

What a sign of the times. Something with that much detail can now be honestly called generic.Best First wrote:its pretty generic.

Umm...should probably mention that I added the "pecs" in photoshop. The real Iron Man doesn't have them. 'Twas supposed to be a joke, or jest of sorts, but no-one mentioned them.Best First wrote:elongated neck appears to be a consistant issue as well - look at where his head is in relation to his pecs!

Death's Head 2 has a lot of detail, but is generic in the "Cable build" / muscleman sense.Señior's Covenant wrote:What a sign of the times. Something with that much detail can now be honestly called generic.
It really doesn't look much like Iron-Man; far more Gundam-ish, especially the gun and 'wings'.

Wait, so.....
As for Iron Man, as has been previously stated, I'd sooner smear poo on my walls then give Pat Lee $$$.sprunkner wrote:What happens in Infinite Crisis?

First thing I thought when I saw it - "Transformer, oh dear!"

Was gonna mention the super-inflated* burger-nipples, but then I read the replies and decided it probably wouldn't have the same effect.Metal Vendetta wrote:Umm...should probably mention that I added the "pecs" in photoshop. House of M..eh?
I love the attention to detail given to such things as comic books nowadays. Accepted art form, hell yes. Accepted reading, hell yes.
This sketch definitely doesn't say "Iron Man". Though that may be little fault of Pat's... he is known for drawing giant robots, after all. Rep may be the reason why he was called on to draw Iron Man... different may be what was asked for. "Freshen" the look and all.
(or did he choose this? Unclear on situ.)
Still... when an artist is commissioned to do work on an already established character, the result should at least resemble that character in some sense.
As a stand-alone piece, I think this is a decent sketch. Generic, yeah... but with less of the things I found annoying about Pat's (tf) art before. There's not really any trace of the "looking up a tall building/structure" syndrome, less of that slightly annoying rounded look... (then again, no need to tend towards exaggerated hight when the character isn't supposed to be enourmous, I guess...)
I don't know, I've always liked raw pencils of anything. So maybe these things aren't jumping out at me like they would with a so-called "finished" piece.
Except maybe those things on his hips. WTF are those, anyway? And the things on his back. Just visual kibble? Then again... without the hip thingies, the picture might look a little top-heavy. A simpler drawing might be a touch less impressive... eh, I dunno. it all looks rather useless except in a visual balance/flow/"impressiveness" sense... unless they're actually supposed to be something and I just haven't figured it out...?
All in all, it's a pretty picture. But it doesn't say "Iron Man" to me either.

Agree on it looking like an eye-watering mish-mash of several mecha designs seemingly clumped together in a 'oh, wouldn't it be OmG KeWL!1 if -'?' way that either smacks of design-by-commitee or an artist still creatively turned on by fanwank fantasy. When I first saw it I thought it was just horrendous, a total joke, but apparently it makes a lot of sense in the context of the book. Mecha-Gladiators kind of deal. So, I guess if you like mecha and Iron Man, it'd be a great book. Fair enough.
Nice pecs, tho.
Also agree on the weird use of detailing. Nothing wrong with detail in pencils, but doesn't it seem to work better when either very tight or very graceful? The detailing in the above work seems at the same time loose and scrappy and yet also possessed of boring rigidity. Like his legs'd snap off at the knees if he tried to take a step, yet the hip attachments are held on by silly-string and double-sided sticky tape.
Still, he has the Porsche and lots of other people's money, and I don't.
There's a review of the book at the Fourth Rail

Gets a good review, tho with some crits on the art
LITG this week said - as well as some more snarking about Dreamwave's stuff being sold off - that he's doing Batman/Superman next.
Didn't see that one coming. Tho it makes more sense the more I think about it. Urg, tho.

So, looking at it again knowing what we know about Wand- uh, Sapien Death Match Iron Man. Hhrmmm. Impressive work, it'd be lovely if I had anything like that drawing ability, but really. Meh.The art's pretty good -- definitely leaps and bounds better than what Pat Lee offered up in the abysmal X-Men/Fantastic Four limited series earlier this year -- but the visuals are still occasionally rough and difficult to make out...
Fans of Lee's Transformers art will be pleased with his Iron Man armor redesign (as seen on the cover), as well as the big-robot action of the plot.
That aspect of the story plays to Lee's established strengths and his core audience.
Still, some of those elements aren't as clear as they could be. We never get a clear picture of Johnny Storm's "Flame On" armor, for example.
Furthermore, Lee's human figures are rendered inconsistently, and it's really only color cues that set Tony apart from his father, for example.
The computer-enhanced art brings a nice amount of detail to the backgrounds, but one can see the artificial nature of that approach in the foreground and in the characters' faces. It's not as polished as it should be.
