Richard Whiteley

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

Indeed. I loved countdown through University and while I doss in my summer hols. I'd actually try and get my brain in gear and fail miserably on the words but loved the maths, as I'd get it. Always entertained.

I really liked the guy, bad puns an all. Countdown worked because of its genius in its simplicity and the good nature of the presenters who always appeared to be having fun and enjoying the challenge. Added by the fact they actually had a brain and the program never dummed down for trendy purposes and that’s why it was such a charm to watch.

It really is the end of an era. Countdown couldn't be done without him. First man to present channel 4 and all. It's almost like the TF comic series story. Only meant to last 4 issues and all. Countdown was only meant to last 5 weeks but did 23 years.
