New music - new releases, not just 'new' bands - is pretty up and down at the mo' for me. Very little to actively go 'WoW!' over, quite a lot to go 'hmmm' about. I get to - have to more like - listen to lots of music at work, which invariably includes the new releases, so I've heard a lot of the stuff mentioned.
I think the best thing mentioned is the new System album, it's the tops. Clever, funny and seriously rocks hard. Is very short, but then is also cheaper than your average bear. In a climate of entirely mediocre albums in which things like the Killers - who I do like but are kinda US-styled reheats of mid-90's indie - seem like a breath of fresh air, this is the one recent album that actually kicks out and goes for it. Wildly inventive, a hell of a lot of fun and not as stupid as it may at first appear.
Sorry, I'm in the 'dislike Coldplay' camp. To me, the new album is the plops. They seem to have managed to make music that is both boring and painful to listen to at the same time, so at least deserve a modicum of respect. However, it's largely just mince to my ears, sorry. There's one track on the album I kinda liked, think it was the 2nd one, as it seemed to sound like a bunch of 6th year kids trying to sound like Pink Floyd.
I just don't get the Coldpay thing - although liked some of the discordant elements on the first album. Their 'epic' sound just seems to involve putting some reverb on a guitar, echoes on Chris -can't actually sing for turnips- Martin's voice and replacing the bass with some plinky-plonky keyboard. Still, XYZ or whatever the hell it's called seems vaguely more interesting than the one before that, which was just a ******* horrendous whinefestdirgebag of an album.
New Tears album is...just like early Suede except not as good. I have a mate who's a huge Suede fan and he likes it a fair deal, so I expect it'll go down well with those similarly inclined.
The Gorrilaz album isn't actually that bad, but it's not very 'listen to me! Listen to me!' and is also quite short or just gives that impression. I can barely remember anything about it except that I was relieved it was on and Coldplay had finished.
Similarly, I head the new White Stipes album as well and can't remember a thing about it other than it was allright. Hmpf.
New QOTSA album is the worst one they've yet released, but is still fairly nifty. I was gutted when I first heard it tho, esp when the version of 'In My Head' on it is worse than the one on Desert Sessions 9+10.
I do luv Nick Oliveri but I wasn't expecting his depature to so neuter the Queens like this.

Cool. That makes 4 people I know of who are aware that this rather excellent band exists.
Most interesting thing I've head recently is the newest Sons and Daughters album...although it does have this one song on it that sounds like Nick Cave backed up by the Pogues which I'm not sure about.
