Puressence are awesome. Zarak on the Archive is also a fan.
The new album should be out in Sept , possible title is Palisades...or however it's spelt. Planet Hopeless is probably the worst album sadly Brend, it's got a lot of good songs but they are lost in some lifeless production.

Of the new acts around...
I like Kasabian a lot. Half of the Killers album is also really good. Half is quite tepid.
But a lot of new bands are quite boring, luckily there's a wealth of great stuff that I've hardly heard from decades before I was born - I dont really give a monkeys about new music, as I can find out about old stuff or play the stuff I've got that I love but have totally forgotten about.

I thought it was some rapper blokes on the new song (the one with the windmill video, right?).Brendocon wrote:New Gorillaz song is fab. Shaun Ryder!
It was okay, but wasn't anywhere near the genius of the first album (is ANY second album better than the first?). I even shelled out for the CD+DVD version of Demon Days. What the hell was that intro about? It was just friggin' noise as far as I could tell.
The whole album was rather 'meh' and samey sounding, I doubt that it'll be in the CD player very often.
Then again, what do I know? I like David Essex.
"Feel Good Inc" is the current single, has a windmill video and the rapping is done by one of the regular members.Autobloke wrote:I thought it was some rapper blokes on the new song (the one with the windmill video, right?).Brendocon wrote:New Gorillaz song is fab. Shaun Ryder!
The new single is "Dare" and features guest vocals from Shaun Ryder.
That depends, most people regard any deviation from the established formula as being bad. "OMG! It's not exactly the same! Its crap!!11one"(is ANY second album better than the first?).
Second albums that are better than the debut? IMO...

As I say, it's entirely subjective, as different people look for different things; and I see many people slag off bands for daring to do something vaguely different. It seems that some folk are overeager to criticise variation, yet they'd be the first to jump all over an act if they made the same song over and over again.
And there's a shedload of 3rd albums that are better than everything before. London Calling, White Blood Cells, Free All Angels, Absolution, the Holy Bible, OK Computer...
All in my own opinion, of course...
And there's nowt wrong with David Essex.
Grrr. Argh.

I always spend a day playing a new album over and over while I'm at the PC so I don't judge it on just a single listening. There are few albums that ever satisfy on the first play, needing at least three for me to get into them. I gave Gorillaz two whole days of continuous play, but it just doesn't do anything for me, which is a real pity.
I'm certainly not against a band/group/artist trying something different, but as I'm kinda picky about what I like, 'something different' usually means that the 'ingredient X' that I liked is lost. That doesn't always happen of course, and occasionally it takes the music to a higher level.
I love Shakira's music too, and the fact that she writes it all herself has meant that it has a consistency of quality that I like (even her home language stuff). I've heard that her new album and the one coming out in November are collaborations with other people, which DOES concern me. Hopefully she'll have the last say (I should imagine so) and will try to preserve the sound that her fans like, and won't stray too far from the norm. At least, not all in one album - which I think is the 'first/second album degredation' problem. I'm sure that this is what happens: an artist is usually controlled during their first album, but has more freedom for their second. They're determined to make their own sound that is different from the first album. Unfortunately, their 'own sound' is usually talentless dump (ex Spice Girls members - I mean YOU). If they survive to a third album, they've usually learnt their lesson and gone back to their first album a bit to try and fix things (except the ex Spice Girls).
Hell, Michael Jackson has successfully reinvented his music several times, but his last few albums have been utter pump.
Ah, I'll go and give Demon Days another spin...
And David Essex? He's a nice guy.
