New PC help

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

New PC help

Post by Brendocon » Tue May 17, 2005 3:50 pm

Okay, I'm doing something I normally wouldn't do (and laughed at Anglo for doing before me) - I'm asking computer-buying advice on the internet.

Well, actually I'm not... I'm mainly after information to make sure I don't get ripped off.

It's been a long time since I bought a computer, the standard specs have changed a lot since then and I have no idea what's good/bad/whatever, nor the going rate for them.

I'm not after advice on whether or not I really want what I'm after or what brand I should be buying or any of that cack. I've got a vague idea of what I'm after and anybody judging that or telling me to buy something different can take a flying one off the edge of the nearest high rise. I'm not asking what I should buy, I'm after what I should expect to pay.

If I were to buy a PC with a 3gb (approx) processor, 300mb (approx, I know they don't come in multiples of that, this is just rough whatever) of RAM and 80gig of hard drive space, what would I be looking at paying for it?

Thankyoomuchly :)
Grrr. Argh.

Would Dell's website be any good as a starting point for you?

I hear good things about them, and you can pick a basic package and add bits and pieces as you require-should get you what you want, and it'll tell you fer how much. Plus, they normally have a 'double your memory for free' deal or some such.

Do you mean: 3 Ghz Processor, 256 or 384 Mb Ram?

i'd be suprised if you found a prebuilt system that came with 384Mb RAM... 256Mb yes (although i would aim more for 512Mb seeing as RAM is so cheap at the moment)

you're probably looking at around £400 i reckon.

What do you want to use it for, and do you want to carry over bits/peripherals from an existing machine? You may find putting together a box together with bits from somewhere such as eBuyer is a good solution, in which case you can just browse through with a shopping basket...

Most important question is whether you want it for gaming.

Gaming, mainly. Well, not mainly... I use my comp mainly for internet/general home stuff. The game aspect is what's prompting the upgrade, as my machine's about five years old and any new game I fancy won't run on it.

Ergo, I want to upgrade to something that'll do for now, and will also do for new games a few years down the line. I don't want to get three years from now and find that the minimum spec is more than I've got again.

I can probably carry over the peripherals from my existing machine. Am looking at getting a new monitor, though, as my current one's a bit on the bulky side. Plus, thinking about it, the spacebar on this keyboard's been technically broken for the past two years... all out replacement is probably my favourite option.

The notion of building my own computer from bits and pieces fills me with hysteria and dread.

PP - ta. Will check the Dell website for a vague idea next chance I get. :) I'm currently in the "find out how much stuff would cost" phase at the moment... it's not as if I have the money to buy a new computer, but I'd like to know roughly how much I need to raise.

[potential stupid question]Are laptops more expensive than similarly-specced PCs?[/psq]

Yes, laptops are going to be more expensive and not perform as well. Although if you're looking to upgrade your monitor as well, you might not be looking at too large of a price difference between a desktop and a laptop.

Also, not sure if they do dealings with you Brits, but check out www.ibuypower.com

In addition to laptops being more expensive, you can't upgrade them very easily (or at all for most things), and the battery might die on you. The one my church uses for the video projector gets used once a week for a few hours, and occasionally at other times, and is always plugged into the mains - and the battery. It's a couple of years old, but the battery has been utterly useless for at least a year. And when I say useless, I mean works for a few seconds at most.

Plus I find 'em very uncomfortable for prolonged use, personally—too much hunching with neck at odd angles.

I'd suggest a basic off-the-shelf with onboard stuff, a reasonably quick processor (no need to go overboard) and then just put a beefy graphics card into it yourself (check for a free AGP slot when buying.) If you're after a TFT it's probably cheaper to get it as part of a package.

In three years chances are reasonable you'll still be able to upgrade the graphics card rather than having to bother with a full overhaul. You can always add a bit more RAM if necessary too, though I'd suggest starting out with 512Mb (and at least one free RAM slot) initially.

You'll probably never bother upgrading the processor, so just get something a few notches down from whatever a company is charging the most for.

Yeah, me too in the five minutes between fitting a motherboard and getting it to power up... you'll get used to it if you start down this road, though. Knowing how to switch stuff in and out is potentially a decent time and money saver. It probably isn't worth trying to carry over too much from a system of that vintage though, so would suggest buying a system this time and just getting to grips with adding a decent graphics card and possibly some extra RAM.

One thing: be aware that some systems manufacturers nobble so that only some cards will physically fit into a case. Always get info about free slots (RAM, AGP, PCI etc) and consider an established local firm for the base build.

A local firm would also handle a custom build and do the card/RAM stuff for you, plus be a point of contact rather than having to ship back to a website address if it turned up incorrect or dead-on-arrival.

Isn't a new video game about the only reason anybody bothers to upgrade these days?
