Playstation 3?

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

Playstation 3?

Post by Kaylee » Tue May 17, 2005 11:03 am

Following on the success of my XBox topic, I'm now starting on the prequels in a George Lucas-esque bid to finally please my fans and recapture the magic of youth.

Or something.

Probably something.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/4554025.stm

Specs:

CPU Cell Processor running at 3.2Ghz with 2.18 teraflops of performance
Backward compatible
256Mb XDR main RAM at 3.2 GHz
256Mb of GDDR VRAM at 700Mhz
Memory Stick Duo, SD, compact flash memory slots
Detachable 2.5 inch hard drive
Support for seven Bluetooth controllers
Six USB slots for peripherals
Supports Blu-ray DVD format
Output in HDTV resolution up to 1080p as standard

Considering the wealth of PS2 games already existing and the awesome specs and top name games already commited to it, it really does sound like between this and the XBox Nintendo is dead in the water!

I think the controller looks horrible.
It's like a god damn banana or something.

Oh well, as long as it's comfortable.
Looking forward to play Pro Evolution Soccer on that thing :D

The controller is indeed highly strange! Tho it's bluetooth, so no nasty tangly wires which I like the sound of ^_^

Well I'm guessing they have a reason for designing the controller like that. MS did with the XBox certainly... they made it so unusable you had to go buy the upgraded version

It processing power sounds awesome, the idea of almost cinematic graphics would be so swish especially if they can couple it with virtual reality.

The wireless controller is enough for me to want one.

"with 2.18 teraflops" I dont even know what this is, so I'll just shut my trap now ;)

both xbox and ps use wireless controllers now.

the PS 3 as predicted, has twice the cpu of the xbox 360.

interesting.

out of all the videos from E3 so far, FF7 tech demo trailler on the PS 3 impresses me most. but the difference in graphical terms between PS3 and XBOX 360 is yet to be seen clearly.

tbh I'd have thought graphics were getting so advanced now its hard for the layman to tell what the improvements are anyway :)

Ive spotted a few nice bits here and there ;)

Generally speaking, the level of detail doesnt change much, tho in the PS3 Tekken video, Jin Kazama has 'bum fluff' style hair along the ridge of his neck, its transparent and lit via a specular light. his skin also has hair pores, and the odd black head, topped off with body sweat!

pointles.. but good! :p

I really wouldn't go by any of the performance numbers put out by either MS or Sony-- especially Sony; Much of that number is as a result of the Cell, which operates as an arch, so it has a high FLOPs rating, but achieving it is next to impossible, for all intents and purposes. That.. and it's Sony/nV FLOPs which tend to be exaggerated to the max.

And either way, they're getting FLOPs numbers by doing a bunch of math assuming that each and every piece of hardware is operating at max capacity, and when they get around to 'backing it up' with software it will be software designed to get the max FLOPs as opposed to an actual piece of game software.

The controller: Because of the way the unit is curved, the shoulder buttons are very 'far away' from the rest of the controls. That's not good for 'pressing power' in somebody's index fingers.

consiering they don't seem to have added any extra buttons it seems a very frivolous redesign...

the MFLOPS rating is good enough to judge power on.

essentially if the PS3 has twice that of the XBOX 360 then its gonna be easier to achive more with less clever jiggery pokery.

the examples been given already is that even if you could get the XBOX to perform its max ablity, on the PS3 you would only have to use around half its power.

CUrrently the few game shots appearing from dev teams are that the PS3 deff has more umpf.

I thought that also. The auquard placing of the L and R buttons aren't impressive considering how often their used these days.

The console is sounding awesome. Graphic so good it can show reflection in characters eyes. Amazing. Though a generation after this will eb virtually an update rather than an advanced console.

Still the important question is will it get rip of loading times?

with more RAM, loading times will be lower.

The demos are great. I think the machine looks vile. The 360 looks very trendy and the Revolution looks incredibly sleek. The ps3 looks like a bread bin.

Still, the ps2 was hardly pretty, look how much that sold for!

I wonder what prices these machines will launch at...

You can pre-order the Ps3 in Sweden for 675$.
Oh yeah.

Think I'll just import one and save me about 150$ when the time comes.
