Charmed

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

Charmed

Post by Pissin' Poonani » Thu Apr 28, 2005 11:00 am

Anybody watch this?

I always avoided it because it didn't look that great, and I had Buffy and Angel to keep me occupied as well. However, I've been watching it on 'Living' for a few weeks now, and I think it's ace-hell, even when it's bad it's good because Alyssa Milano and Rose McGowan = pleasant viewing.

Looks like I may have to start collecting boxsets... (along with 'The Shield' and 'Scrubs').

Reasonably inoffensive, imo. Nowt to get me excited about, but if it's on I'll leave it on. My sister thinks it's brilliant, but at the same time tells me that Buffy's rubbish, so I'm tempted to hate Charmed on principle...

I preordered the first season of Scrubs off Amazon yesterday. It's been listed for ages but not actually available to order until about now. Yay. :)

I think Scrubs is the most consistently funny programme on t'telly. It's one of the few things I find is actually laugh-out-loud funny, and can be absolutely heart breaking as well.

Heather Graham as Molly the shrink is a good new character too-hope they keep her around.

Scrubs is most excellent :)
I think its got a nice blend of physical humour and.. err, verbal humour.

Charmed has never worked for me though.
And neither has Buffy.

:(
Can't believe I'm still here.

Yes, Scrubs is nice :) I wonder if it's still on television?

But Charmed I do not like, I don't know why though, have never really watched it so it must be some non-rational reason.

It is over here-we've just started season 4. :)

I may have over-enthused a bit. I enjoy it, but not in a 'can't miss an episode' way. Like Brend said, it's innofensive. I think my enjoyment comes from being surprised that it's better than I expected it to be-that and Alyssa and Rose who I would happily have over for tea and biscuits. Hell, if they were really nice they could even help me clean out the rabbits and guinea pigs.

Charmed or Scrubs?

Either way, I can see your point-it's infuriating that something like Angel gets ****** off, not only for no good reason but when it was on it's best ever season, and other tat keeps getting picked up. Then again, it's all a matter of personal taste I suppose. I suppose a lot of frustration comes from knowing that (again) Angel was a really solid and well written show with an enormous fan base, and yet it was a case of-"Nah, can't be arsed. It's obviously popular so maybe we should just move on?" Makes you wonder what goes on in the mind of TV executives really.

I think it's a lot to do with Charmed being as vanilla as it is. Much anybody can turn it on and follow it from wherever they start. It's like Friends - there's no real backstory that you need to know about.

Accessible is probably the term. Demographic stuff, too. Can "appeal" to most any market. It's sage programming.

Whereas Angel pays more attention to actually developing ongoing stuff, so isn't easy to dip in-and-out of. Whilst season 5 was more accessible than the previous year's story, it still had large elements of "new viewers might not be able to pick up what's going on" about it.

Imagine if, say, "Underneath" was the first episode you saw. Wouldn't mean much, I dare say. Charmed doesn't generally have that problem, from what I've watched of it - You can see episodes out of order and miss months' worth without suffering huge problems in following it.

Which isn't necessarily a good thing as far as story and believability goes, but it's nice from a network pov. Firefly is a case in point - Fox wanted The Train Job written as a "this is the sort of thing they'll be doing week in week out" thing because they didn't think their viewers had the brains to actually stick with something over a period of time and watch it unfold.

TV stations forget that viewers actually have memory.

[/Blah blah]. Yeah, Charmed is safe tv, Angel wasn't, ergo former goes on whilst the latter (and better) went down in a blaze of glory. I suspect that when Charmed does finally finish, it'll be in a blaze of blah.

When it first came on, I thought it was a spin-off kind of thing from the film Practical Magic, so that was an immediate turn off.

Now, though, I've grown to tolerate the odd episode (I'm rarely in a poistion to watch them on five, and can't be arsed to tape 'em), and recently discovered a friend of mine runs one of the 'official' fansites.

I talk some TV. Here is the news - don't touch that dial. :D

Charmed. Nice to watch for the attractive women in it - except that old-looking one that keeps squirting out the babies. And they seem to wear less and less clothes every episode. HURRAH! (the women, that is - not the babies).
Pap stories though...

How can the stories be considered 'pap'? They use the same one for every episode, so it must be dead good...

No matter how often you repeat it, pap is STILL pap.

I used to watch Charmed a lot a few years back, my mother, my sister and I actually used to be quite into it. After awhile the entire premise of the show got old though... Seemed the same thing every time. Even adding Rose McGowan to the cast after Shannen Doherty left didn't revive interest for long... I haven't seen an episode in aboouuuuut... a year? Give or take a month or so.

I never liked Alyssa Milano. Though I'm not sure if it was dislike for the actress or the character, to be honest. I used to like the older sister (the actress who's name I can never remember) until her character had kids and all. Then she started reminding me of my sister a tiny bit. 0_o

Rose McGowen was the cat in Monkeybone. (everyone seems to hate that film, but I liked it - if only for the animation).
And if you're not sure if you like Alyssa Milano, track down a film she starred in called 'Pool Girl' - she's much less annoying in that. And if the lads reading this are interested: she gets her norks out in it too. But classy-like, obviously.
