I had an interesting experience earlier today, circa lunch. I realized that some desperately needed materials for a class a little later in the day were at home. Home was a good 20-25 minute walk away and I had no way to get there other than walking (or running, as the case was). So, during the 45 minute lunch break, I ran the whole way home to get the materials and subsequently ran most of the way back. I think it amounted to a ballpark area of 3 miles round trip. Not too bad, at least not for an out-of-shape loser like myself. I returned with a good 4 minutes to spare on the clock and felt a bit proud of my accomplishment.
However, my day was quickly rained on when the teacher announced that, due to an unexpected change in schedule, the materials were not going to be needed until tomorrow. Needless to say, I was a bit miffed.
Now, while I am feeling a bit grumpy over this, the point of this post is not to whine about my problems, but rather that I'm curious to see if anyone has had any kind of similar experience? Not so much in a physical way, but rather that you expended a good deal of time and energy into something, only to find that it was unnecessary.

Is it actually irony?
Perhaps if you'd left something at home that you'd had with you all day when you'd gone back for the other stuff, and THAT had been what you now were doing instead of the other thing. That would have been true irony.
(cue Rebis with a link to some precise definition of 'irony')

Definition, erm, examples of Irony:
A locksmith, after winning the locksmith of the year award, locks his tools in his van, and himself out of it.
A city planner, on his way to a city planning conference, is caught up in congestion on a stretch of a city that he planned the road layout specifically to reduce traffic.
Etc.
