Missing file <Windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe

MY pc wont boot up.

Anybody know how I can fix this? My copy of xp is on a recovery disk, when I put that in the drive tries to read it then nowt appens.

Anybody know how this has happened in the first place?

Did you try and change the boot-up screen? That's how I shafted my work computer this way...had to do a fresh Windows install in the end.

if the bios is ****** (i.e doesn't boot into bios or errors occur before bios finishes initiated) try manually restoring it to defaults by opening your PC and removing the battery - It looks like a giant watch battery, just pop it out with a flat screwdriver and leave it on a shelf for 30-45 mins and plug it back in (the right way), This will force your PC to lose all its new Bios settings and revert back to the factory defaults which are hard coded into it.

Of course if it isn' t the bios all this will do is reset the clock and date (unless you have drastically altered the bios in some way)

It doesn't sound like its anything to do with BIOS.

NTOSKRNL should be replaceable if you are able to run the XP disc, if you're having problems with that then it's time for emergency measures.

As this seems like a major shock I'm assuming you weren't fooling around with bootup screens. I'd suggest (if possible) getting XP to boot to disc and then doing a reinstall. Don't erase the disk, just put a new copy of XP over the top.

You should still have all your documents.

Boot up and backup all your documents, then wipe the disk and reinstall everything. I had to do that a while back.
