Need some help

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

Need some help

Post by Pissin' Poonani » Thu Mar 24, 2005 12:00 pm

I want to buy an ebook over the net.

I have no credit card.

My dad has lent me his.

The first thing you have to do is enter your country and postcode, so I put in my dads because I figure they'll match it to his bank details.

It says 'you should never use anyone elses card...blah blah blah'

It then says ' The geographic location of your computer has been determined and recorded. All attempts at fraud will be prosecuted.'

So this means I can't order it right? Because our post codes are different.

I can use his computer, but he has no printer. He has no cd writer but has a floppy drive. I have a cd writer but no floppy, so I can't copy it.

Now, the question: if I email it from his computer to mine, is that safe and legal?

As far as I'm aware, it's not possible for it to determine your location all the way down to postcode.

IP address, yeah.
Phone number you're calling from, possible.
Post code? I'd be stunned.

[/probably wrong]

Do you know if there's any way for them to know if I email it from my dads computer to my own? Or am I being too paranoid?

What happens if your dad wants to buy something and he's at work? Or in an internet cafe?

This seems pretty bogus to me. They'll log your IP and all that, but I think it's just in case your dad later says "My credit card was stolen, and someone's bought an ebook with it!" and then they can say "Ah yes, that was from IP address xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx", and then they can get your location from your ISP.
I would have waited a ******* eternity for this!!!!

Too paranoid. Once you've bought it, it's yours, right?

So (and I know how moronic I sound) if I send this file (it's a pdf job) via email from my dads computer to my own, there is no way of anyone knowing?

Well, there'd probably be server logs recording the email traffic...

But really, it's been bought on your dad's pc using your dad's credit card, and then forwarded as a present to a member of his family.

In the grand scheme of things, it's hardly the work of a master thief. :)

You'll be fine.
