I just finished watching Season 1-- yea, I know I'm behind-- so I was wondering if anyone knows why Doyle was taken off? He was a dang good character, and they didn't have to rely on Buffy for his origin. I mean, it was a beautiful death and all, but... dang!
It was pretty much to show that nobody is really safe from being killed off. Unpredictability and all that.
Joss said on the commentary for the first ep of Buffy that he wanted to put Eric Balfour (Jesse) on the opening credits, just so people would be surprised when he got killed off, but couldn't afford to make two sets of credits. He went on to say that he got the chance to actually do something similar on Angel, but people hated it, so maybe it was best that he hadn't done it with Jesse.
Doyle's death is the catalyst for much of Cordelia's story for the remaining series, though, so it's not all bad.
