If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

RSS Feeds
Post

i've only just discovered the wonderous joys of RSS feeds (having been poking around in Firefox for a couple of hours at work today)... trouble is, i can't seem to find any good (re: interesting) ones... i mean, the likes of BBC News, Slashdot and The Register are the 'news' sites i visit most, but there must be other good ones... how about Transfans starting up an RSS Feed?

You mean
this?
Not that it in itself is a good example of RSS, seeing as it's just a scripting implementation of the same data that could be encapsulated in a RSS XML file.

is there a way I can make a lil ticker window in Firefox to show these feeds, just news for example?

nah, i meant this :
http://news.bbc.co.uk/rss/newsonline_uk ... ge/rss.xml
a nice, straight forward XML feed, which RSS readers (which firefox has built in) polls the URL at intervals and retreives new content... funky, eh?
which i've discovered can be accessed like this in firefox...
![Image](http://img27.exs.cx/img27/2953/rss11xh.th.jpg)
...
instant, automatically updated 'feeds' straight to your browser, handy innit?
[edit]oops forgot to say:
yeah, you could make a ticker for firefox, you'd just have to poll the RSS' URL and retreive the info from it, that is currently beyond my understanding, but i shall be teaching myself it soon hopefully

first of all you need to go to a page with an rss feed..
http://news.bbc.co.uk/ for example and click on the orange icon in the bottom right of firefox, select the "subscribe to blah blah blah" and store it in your "bookmarks toolbar folder".
then go to View->Toolbars->Bookmarks Toolbar and you should get them up below your navigation toolbar.

RSS can be a bandwidth killer if users have clients with badly-written polling routines...

gah - im sorry but the orrange icon, and 'subscribe to this?
I can find the XML feed bit, do I just bookmark that?
The other problem is if I display the toolbar as bookmarks, it shows all my bookmarks. and i cant seem to work out how to just show 1 new bookmark there

no worries!
on news.bbc.co.uk you should see one of these in the bottom right corner...
click on this and select "subscribe to blah blah"
and you should be prompted with a screen like this one:
then if you check your bookmarks they should looks something like this:
it sounds as if all your firefox bookmarks are stored under the "bookmark toolbar folder"... do you see on mine how they're stored outside of it? that's what i think is different on yours.
