Dr Who episodes!

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

According to the DWM review there's a doccumentary on the disc that reveals everyone involved just about hated each other by the end of it, which makes you wonder why they made two more...

I'll be interested to hear people's thoughts on the Barry Letts era. Wading through some of it again, plus seeing some stuff for the first time (Terror of the Autons, Mind of Evil) and I just get the feeling it's a bit safe and a bit slow.

Considering I really like Season 7 I realise my problem is with Letts not Pertwee.

I'm not a huge Pertwee fan.

For all you Americans: The first Tennant Season will start on Sci-Fi around the time of BSG season 3 in September. But The Christmas Invasion will be held back till... Christmas.

Ah, the "first episode last" approach. Recently demonstrated to superb effect by Fox with regards to Firefly.

Gotta respect the classics.

I'm wading through them in order as I find them at the mo. Season 8 looks infinitely more naff that Season 7, even though apparently it had more budget.

Maybe Planet of the Daleks and The Sea Devils will turn the tide (saw them on telly when they were repeated years ago and liked them) or The Daemons and The Time Warrior (never seen 'em, but they sound like my cup of tea).

Indeed. Has nothing been learnt from this? Mind you, Fox shafted Who back in '96 too didn't they?

Anyway, could be worse. Christmas Invasion could be a vitally important episode introducing a brand new doctor.

What?

errr... quick sanity check, Season 7 was pertwee's first wasn't it? right... well if i remember correctly there was a deliberate move to make Season 8 more 'accessable' to the family unit and younger viewers as some people seemed to think Season 7 was too hard 'Sci-Fi' and not DrWho enough... hence dropping Liz (a foxy scientist) in favour of Jo (a bit of blonde crumpet) so there was someone who could do the old "Oooh, what is that Doctor?"... a shame as Season 7 is one of my favourates! :o

They are all good stories, unbeleivably i only saw Planet of the Dalek for the first time a few weeks ago - not a really classic, but quite entertaining. Sea Devils is fantastic (if only for the Clangers cameo) and the Daemons is, of course, great. Time Warrior is a good romp and more importantly SJS's first story!

And not boring enough? ;)

Pertwee stories often seem to come alive in the bits shot on film tho. Explosions! Shootouts! Gurning!

And for those to lazy to click, the are showing The Christmas Invasion first. Yay!

Though I'm worried about the blue suit, normally when the main colour of the Doctor's outfit is changed (Tom in his Red togs, Sylv in his brown coat) it turns out to be their last season...

The Invasion on DVD thoroughly rocks!

Animating the missing episodes is an utter genius idea! I'll be thoroughly pissed off if they don't do it for the rest now!

Incredibly pacey stuff even at 8 episodes long.

Go buy! Now!

The new Sontaran Experiment DVD was a nice cheap purchase, also recommended.

Is it me, or are Miss. Watkins and Zoe the sexiest pairing in Doctor Who history?

Who'd win in a custard fight between Polly and Zoe? That's a question that keeps me awake at night...

DAY OF THE DALEKS

Politician Type Man tells his housekeeper/secretary that he thinks he's seen a ghost, whilst up late working. Obviously this is passed as high priority to UNIT, who send in the Doctor.

Seriously?

Haven't had chance to watch my DVD yet and it's been a few years, but isn't there physical evidence of an intruder as well? Footprints or something?

Or UNIT get called out to this sort of nonsense all the time and we don't see the 99% of occasions it's a result of the MP being "tired and emotional".

They find the footprints after arriving there.

Besides which, windows open, evidence of an intruder... Surely that's call in TEH POLICES not whatever UNIT stood for that week.

Quite relieved actually, thought this was six episodes, turns out to only be four. DAY OF THE DOCTOR BEING SENT FORWARD IN TIME TO CHAT POLITICS INDEFINITELY WHILST SOME DALEKS SKULK ABOUT IN THE BACKGROUND MOSTLY OFFSCREEN.

It's still the best Pertwee Dalek story though.

I don't actually mind it, it's a shame that the Daleks are blatently shoved in a story that was originally written without them, but the Terminatorish time paradox stuff is good (nonsensical) fun. And who doesn't love an Ogron?

It's a rare timey wimey old story isn't it?

It's been a couple of years since I've seen this so I can't decide whether to watch the special edition or the original first.

I used to like the added CGI bits on classic episodes but I've become a bit more of a purist in the last few years. I've heard good things about this though - what do you think?

Heh, just read back the first page of this thread and some of my opinions on these stories has changed A LOT. Though with others my first impressions were bang on.

Yeah, I thought it'd be nice to bump this rather than start a new one. :)

Not bothering to watch the SE of Day. I think the only redone version of anything that I've watched is Curse of Fenric.

Every special edition they've done that no one would have missed if they hadn't just pisses me off more and more they didn't extend Silver Nemesis. A Cyberman boxset with a Tom Baker story in it was really expected to sell worse than The Complete Kamellion? They couldn't even do a straightforward port of the VHS version like they did with the edited TV repeat of Spiders? Damn you stupidly named 2Entertain!

Ah, I definitely like the SE of Fenric, and probably more than the original. The effects aren't intrusive and serve the story. I like it when it almost looks like the effects could've been done at the time if they had an unlimited budget. Unlike the Enlightenment/Planet of Fire ones which are pretty awful.

Right, watching Colony in Space.

Ignoring the bit where The Doctor, having carefully explained the plan in short words to Jo, proceeds to distract and then knock out a telepathic alien...

This is basically a lot of dicking around before we get to "The Master has a wacky weapon on an alien world and plans to hold the universe to ransom". Which is essentially Logopolis, which means that load of tosh was even a recyc of previous idiocy,
Grrr. Argh.
