Ok mass computer upgrade

Ok this will be fun.

Right, i have an old 1.5ghz P4 with 1 GB of RDRAM - I would like to somehow take these parts put them in a new case, and turn it into some sort of large storage space/server type thingy

When I mean lots of space im talking as many 100's of GB as my cash will sensibly stretch too.

Ok with said old case, I intend to make a new computer - new cpu,HD,MB,ram etc.. ive sort of worked this one out, and it comes to about £600

any thoughts on mass storage server?

I also have my dual Xeon machine that needs an upgrade to its CPU's - but this is just horribly expensive...

head [composite word including 'f*ck'] - I can easily see this costing about £1500

Get several biiig hard disks then put Solaris 10 UNIX on it. Solaris pools storage space over multiple locations so you'll be able to use it as one big many many hundred GB storage dump despite it using multiple hard disks.

or just use make sure your new motherboard has RAID abilities, then you can do the same under windoze too.

UNIX systems are more suited to servers and it cuts motherboard costs, tho.

so if i use my old MB and my old 1.5cpu, should i stick them in a tower with 2 big 300 GB drives? or can i fit this into a slimline case and wall mount it, in time i could add to it i guess and keep it all small and tidy or somthing. oh im in a right mess.

Id take the little bit at a time approach. Just keep adding to it as you wish, and tuck it away under the stairs or something. That's where my server lives
