Fired

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

Fired

Post by sprunkner » Thu Mar 10, 2005 7:26 pm

I got fired from my favorite job I've ever had, at this wilderness program for troubled teens. They thought my wife and I working together was causing problems. I think it's a load of bollocks and they're stupid. The thing that really pisses me off is that I know this program works. I was sent to it and it made a difference for me. I feel like the guy who understands the company visiona nd believes in it and is working for it and I get punished for their stupid methods.

My wife was released with me. I wrote a long rant about it lasdt night but it just made me more bitter. At least they told me I would get some severance pay.

My wife is worried it's her fault. Honestly, the whole thing was very weird, esp. compared to when I worked there before. I think it was the anamoly of a married couple being out there together; we were overscrutinized and carefully watched.

Very weird. You know, our society rewards people who don't make waves. Ever thought about that? Standing up for something and saying, "You lied to me," or This is not what I thought I was in for," will destroy you.

They had said they would keep the two of us (Chrissy and I) together out there. So we did a few weeks together, then the management changed their plan and wanted to keep us apart. I told them that wasn't the deal we thought we were getting when we were hired. So they fired us.

Don't make waves, I guess. Still a frustrating sitch.

Well, I wish I could say this suprises me, but it doesn`t. I`m suprised you lasted as long as you did, many places even here in the UK won`t have spouses or any family working together now. Hell, in the US you can be fired for starting up a relationship at work!

Glad the company I work doesn't do that. While she's moved on to do her own things, my wife & I originally met at work.

Sorry to hear that sprunkner. :( Make sure you reassure you're wife it most certainly was NOT her fault, as you mentioned she thought it might be.

Muchas gracias to Mob for the Sig, proving why he's called 'King'.

The "i" in "Señior" from "Señior's Covenant" is intentional and part of a stupid & cheesy inside joke from '02. Thank you for your concern.

Dude- sorry to hear.

That's so ******. My mom and dad have worked together at various places for years and if anything they've always worked better as a team. Same goes for pretty much every other couple I know of who works with their spouse.

Not nice, you should look into unfair dismissal.

Me and my bro worked together we were on the same department but not the same team. There are also a lot of married couples within my department, I work for quite an open minded company though.

Have you got anything lined up Sprunker? Hope everything's ok?

I hope you got that earlier agreement in writing. If so, take em to the BBB and slap em a few times with a court order.

If you didn't, you may still have a case. Either way take it to the better business bureau.

Thanks for your support guys.

I don't have anything lined up, but I'm friends with the company president, and he offered me severance pay to take care of rent and stuff. We were only working there till May 1st since that's the day we're leaving for London for six weeks. So... temp agencies I guess. Because of this the program lost my support and my family's support, which I think will hurt them in the long run, since I've recommended it to multiple people as a place to send teenagers with difficult problems.

I did make sure Chrissy knows it's not her fault. Honestly, I was glad to see this side of the place-- helps me realize it's not such a wonderful place, a "cure-all" after all. I saw a lot of kids who acted up to get their parents' attention. So their parents, being rich, sent them away to Arizona for six weeks. I liked the program because it forced the parents to participate as well-- like spending the last week in the wilderness with their kid. So, as far as appearances went, the families were a part of the program. The problem was, the kids would often go home from said week with parents and get sent straight into another program where their parents could keep them at far more than arm's length. Is this making a lot of sense? I realized that these juvenile programs are being used as a dumping ground. People with enough money can take the kids off their hands for a while.

So anyway, I guess I'm glad to be out of the field. Moral of the story, I guess: when your kids act up, don't send 'em away.
