Some great music about at the moment

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

Some great music about at the moment

The Bravery - very hyped but worth it. Kind of like Electo-Morrissey, with melodies.

Kaiser Chiefs. A bit Blur-ish, but they remind more of Longpigs. Great album, full of energy. Amazing live.

Stereophonics new one. The last 2 albums were wank, this is absolutely top. None of the crappy dull ballady ***** they have been pouring out for the last 4 years. Almost every track is brilliant. A complete surprise.

Blue Merle - walking in the sun. Picked this up randomly in New York. The singer is pitch note perfect for Chris Martin of Coldplay, but the tunes are really nice too.

Lemon Jelly - 64-95. Better than the last album, which was amazing. Nuff said.

The Futureheads album is pretty good too.

Any other recommendations?

It's been about a while, but the Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster album's really good. Might be a bit on the heavy side for some, though.

LCD Soundsystem album's got some cracking tracks on it.

New Feeder album left me a bit blasé, tbh. Not listened to the new Doves yet.

Chems' Push the Button is being given time to grow on me...
Grrr. Argh.

I'm tempted sorely by the Kaiser Chiefs, but haven't heard anything except 'Oh My God', which is excellent. I also heard a Bravery song last night and was thoroughly impressed.

I quite fancy the new single 'Cash Machine' by a west London band called either 'Hardfire' or 'Hard Five' (terrible pronunciation by these radio DJs) as well - nicely downbeat, reminds me slightly of the Stereo MCs.

I saw the LCDs the other week...nice tunes, but I'm always disappointed when a band can't come up with decent lyrics:

"Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah"

Wank. Almost as bad as the Basement Jaxx:

"Bingy bingy bingy bingy bingy bingy bing bango"
I would have waited a ******* eternity for this!!!!

Got the Kaiser Chiefs album. Got some filler on it, but half of its brilliant.

Already ordered the Bravery.

I think the Doves album is ok (mainly the first half), but I think they're a bit overrated.

The Bloc Party and Interpol albums ain't bad. I know I've gone on about the Dears but they're deff worth a listen too.

Is Futureheads worth getting? Thing is, theres a lot of music sounding similar at the moment - is is stand out enough?

From a technical standpoint, their songs never change key.

That becomes a problem after 5 albums. :(

Been avoiding the Doves since I saw them play support for Oasis years ago, and they were the most terminally dull live act I have ever seen. I swear I fell asleep in the moshpit. Talk about raising mediocrity to the next level.

Isn't Dream On the one that Eminem sampled (or stole wholesale) for Sing for the Moment? Good tune.

Hmm, i'm seeing Doves in a few weeks - but its mainly a chance to see some mates.

Got The Music Album - pretty straight foarwrd rock but enjoyable for it.

Off to see a band called Wilco next week.

And Teenage Fanclub have a new album out in the summer - woo!

I really like the new Doves album, but i dont think its music that translates well into live performances.

New phonics album is ace though. It just feels...fresh.

If you like Bravery and Kaiser Chiefs (ugh...)

Hawthorne Heights and My Chemical Romance are worth checking out.

Good stuff.

Stuff I've picked up lately.

The Music: Welcome to the North - Thoroughly enjoyable, thumping rock
The Killers: Hot Fuss - Nothin' too deep, but some well put together catchy pop-rock on most of the tracks
Manic Street Preachers: Lipstick Traces - A really good B-sides collection, had a few I hadn't heard before, disc one is orignal songs disc two is covers
Manic Street Preachers: Lifeblood - Not so good, but not as ***** as the music press has made it out to be. I'd say as an album it's better than their last (which was them trying to be who they were 10 years ago) but the individual songs aren't as stand out. Some good tracks, but I think it's the sad, mellowness that turned people off and on some songs it turns a bit muddy. Don't go looking for another Holy Bible or you'll be sorely disappointed.

Please tell me you didn't just say the Killers, Blackie.

Anyway:
Black Heart Procession: Sounds like Bob Dylan singing lead for Pink Floyd. With a better piano player.
3-Mile Pilot: Same as above, but harder, rockier stuff.
Thrice: If you like anything punkish, you will love this band. Extremely good musicians, very fast, very hard, and yet very melodic.
Cursive: It will blow your mind. Punk/hard rock accompanied by a cello.

And if you really do like the Killers, the best dance-rock band to appear in the last few years is the Faint. Sounds like a dark, twisted 80s band.

The Killers rule. As do Franz Ferdinand, The Hives, and Graham Coxon.

Yeah, haven't really listened to it in a while. The frustrating thing is that I know they still have it in them because the Masses Against the Classes single wasn't too long ago and the two orignal songs on that were among their best.

Kinda sucks that my favourite bands are past their prime.

U2s' latest was a simlar story. I liked Atomic Bomb better than All That You Can't Leave Behind, but it still felt too much like U2 trying to be U2. Another safe album. A couple really solid tracks but even those failed to really make their mark. I stand by my opinion that U2's last great effort, despite it's flaws, was Pop back in 1997. The sad thing is that I really can't say that I care if they make another album. I'll see them live cause they are still among the best in that capacity.

And Sprunker, listen to the entire Killer's album before you pass judgement. Somebody Told Me got old fast, but the album's about 75% good material.

I think your version of the album is better. Instead of 'Glamorous Indie Rock n Roll' you've got 'Change Your Mind', an infinitely superior song.

Shame really. They got famous here first, are on a UK record label, and we get the worse album.

I think half of the Killers is reall good, half is a bit turgid.

tbh, I think most of the new stuff out is a bit boring, although I do like Doves. Agree with Ben though, it's not really lively stuff, just nice to listen to.

Oh yeah, Graham Coxo - needs a charisma injection. has some nice melodies, but he could pretty easily change all his lyrics to 'look at my shoes and be a mouse' - that's all I ever get from him. I think Damon bullied him.
