What's special about where you live?

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

What's special about where you live?

Yeah I'm bored. But I really want to know!!

The best thing about where I live is country living with city convenience. Of course, Greenville's getting pretty big itself. But if it's still too small, then Charlotte and Atlanta are only a few hours away. It's only 3 hours to the beach and 1 hour to the mountains, so I've got the best of everything! The people are friendly, the trees are big & green, the weather is great (most of the time), and of course we can't forget the Gaffney Peach!

Image

Yes, SC actually grows more peaches than Georgia, so we decided to put up a giant water tower in the shape of a peach! The Gaffney Peachoid sits right beside I-85 on the way to Charlotte, so it's pretty visible.

What's good, bad or strange about where you live?

My city is one of the most beautiful ever! :)

It's quite old (1100-1200) so it has lots of picturesque buildings and cute canals with bridges. I'm really happy to live here and walk around this amazingly beautiful city every day.

Bit like Amsterdam, but cute and small. Quite touristy though.

And it's not too large, so it's quite a safe place to live in.

Lots of students, so nice bars and restaurants.

Too bad we don't have much nice shops for shopping, but there are two large cities (Rotterdam and Den Haag) only 10 minutes by train away.

And it's just an hour biking to the beach too! :)

We have no mountains anywhere in the country.

And I want a peach too. :(

Well, there are plans to build Europe's tallest building, and Northern Europes most advanced shoppingmall, about 500 - 1000 meters from my home.
Can't believe I'm still here.

http://www.bournemouth.co.uk/

thats where I live - im 1-2 min from the beach, depends if i jog or not.

the front page image on the web site where u can see the pier is pretty much what i see when walk up the road from my house to the beach.

Actually that picture is taken from 'Southbourne' thats east of bournemouth, but thats being really picky, essentially its still bournemouth.

So check it out, I feel very lucky to live where I do, im glad my parents moved from london to hear 27 years ago, they said it was cheap then, now a small flat costs about £100k... so im prolly not gonna be able to stay here unfortuantly as its bit expensive.

There's probably more bad things *cough*sectarianism*cough* about Glasgow than good ones, but some things I like about the place are:

-that the best comic-book creators in the world live here,
-we have a great homegrown music scene and regularly get all kinds of other bands and musicians gigging here,
-you basically trip over superb pubs and restuarants,
-the museums and galleries are all free and regularly put on great exhibitions and shows,
-the comedy festival is like the Fringe with all the pretentious twats and hordes of tourists removed ie better,
-the biggest 'fell-off the back of a lorry' market I know of happens every week down at the Barras and you can buy almost anything there for cheap, some things often before they technically exist,
-we've got 3 big universities in the city which makes 'yoof' or 'student' culture a big part of the place,
-we have the best shops in Scotland,
-it's easy to get around due to there being a tube, decent buses and trains, an integrated motorway or two, roads largely laid out on a grid system, lots of parking and it's also not too dear to live in if you know the score.

We also have many nice old buildings (that the council seems to like knocking down) and a statue of the Duke of Wellington with a traffic cone on his head. :)

Considering that I've never seen London outside of the movie theater, that doesn't really tell me much. But if London actually is like it looks in the movies, then you don't have to tell me anything more. :p

all the shops of a city, all the size of a town! it's Canterbury, about 2000 years old with the best shopping outside of London, but you can still walk across it in 20 minutes :)

The Canucks. That alone makes my city the best.

That and it's been voted best city to live in, best city to visit, the Canucks, the 2010 Olympic games, U2 is rehearsing for their tour here, the Canucks, the Giants, what was the largest dome stadium in the world, or some such (I am not to sure it still is) Expo '86, The Canucks, Whistler is an hour away, it's not Toronto, and the Canucks.

Sheffield, England. Birthplace of Def Leppard, Joe Cocker and 80s electronica.

Also, if you have a decent quality knife that's more than about 15 years old, then odds-on its made of Sheffield Steel.

Offically the greenest city in England, in terms of tree coverage.

We have lots of hills.....?! Ah well......

Not too much is special about where I live. I'm in a valley, right next to the river, and I have to drive 20~30 miles to reach anything resembling a super market.
I guess its special because its peaceful.

Given that people who live here have have nicknamed my city Borington there's not a whole lot to say, though the strip of waterfront at Spencer Smith park is rather nice. And the Liberty Island scenes in X-Men were fillmed there (some friends of mine met Brian Singer).

Eh? Only thing I question is why he thinks U2 being in town is a good thing... :eyebrow:

Anyway, more cars per capita than anywhere else in the world, and seemingly the same could be said for coney island restaurants. Home of the Big 3 automakers, the 2005 Major League Baseball All-Star Game, the 2006 Super Bowl, and the 2004 NBA Champion Detroit Pistons as well as the winningest American hockey franchise, the Detroit Red Wings. Origin and HQ of Motown and home of such rock legends as Bob Seger, Ted Nugent, and Mitch Ryder, and of current stars Eminem, D12 and Kid Rock. Location of Beverly Hills Cop, Robocop, The Crow, and subject of the uber famous KISS song Detroit Rock City.

And the famous line; "Ain't no party like a Detroit party cuz a Detroit party doesn't stop!" I forget who says that tho, and I'm sure I'm leaving out a few things and people cuz I'm trying to do this off the top of my head, but yeah. I think I've covered enough.

That aside from the point that I live here, of course.

Things about Austin, Texas:

1. Long, hot summers. Both a good thing (tubing, eating outdoors, minimal clothing) and a bad thing (sweaty, and that draining, beating, neverending sun)

2. Very fit city. Lots of bike/hike trails, sport leagues, golf/disc golf courses, etc. Lots of public parks and awesome hill country camping 20 minutes away.

3. Although we may be the capitol, and although Bush WAS the governor in our very city, we were one of the few counties who voted for Kerry in the last eleciton. Basically, we're a city that used to be very artsy and small, with lots of great small clubs and hippies. But in the last 20 years, the tech boom (led by Dell) has created a creeping swell of money and conservative republicanism from the affluent north. As a result, Austin is now a more corporate, moderate city, with more money flowing around.

4. We still have lots of great clubs and bars, and virtually all of them have live music. Looking forward to SXSW, our local music/film festival, next week. I'm going to go see Sleater-Kinney.

5. Great Mexican food. Not as good as my hometown (San Antonio), but still better than virtually all of you! With apologies to Senor and the Emperor, of course.

6. Tens of thousands of 18-22 girls that never age.

7. Strange? We have a local celebrity named Leslie who is a homeless guy who walks around town in women's clothing, or sometimes just a g-string and a cowboy hat. He runs for mayor every election and usually gets several thousands votes.

8. Bad? Traffic. Traffic. Traffic.
