The hell?Gay rights activists have protested at a north German zoo's plans to test the sexual orientation of six male penguins which have displayed homosexual traits.
Bremerhaven's Zoo am Meer said it would introduce four extra female penguins from Sweden to the group to see if the males really were gay.
But zoo director Heike Kueck said "gay groups worldwide have been cursing us since that announcement".
The zoo says it just wants to encourage the rare Humboldt penguins to breed.
The males have been observed trying to mate with each other and trying to hatch offspring out of stones.
"We don't know whether the three male pairs are really homosexual or whether they have just bonded because of a shortage of females," said Mrs Kueck, quoted by Germany's Der Spiegel news magazine.
Gay groups insisted that penguins had a right to form couples without human interference, she said.
"Nobody here wants to forcibly separate homosexual couples," she said

The "i" in "Señior" from "Señior's Covenant" is intentional and part of a stupid & cheesy inside joke from '02. Thank you for your concern.

Homosexual, blind* or just plain stupid? You decide! The males have been observed trying to mate with each other and trying to hatch offspring out of stones.
"We don't know whether the three male pairs are really homosexual or whether they have just bonded because of a shortage of females," said Mrs Kueck, quoted by Germany's Der Spiegel news magazine.
Not that homosexuality is peculiar to homo sapiens in any way.

It's surprising to the average person how many species let population numbers drop by simply choosing not to breed.
Gay, straight... they're just labels, and it's as stupid to apply them to other species as our own. When it gets down to it, there's just attraction.
My guess is that the penguins can be encouraged to mate and effectively preserve the species, but they'll tend to return to group partners after. It's popular myth that penguins mate for life.

What's to be upset about? All research is beneficial in some way, so this is bound to bring something new to the table. (using unethical methods in said research is another thing altogether, or using said results of said research for unethical things also.)
And by chance I've acctually seen on tv on a show called Pet-hospital that in the zoo-logical park in Skansen they've had one couple of Penguins that were homosexuall, so it's not unheard of.
All the more reason to study it, as it also appears to be fairly rare too.
I might also like to point out that I've recently thought about looking into the so called Queer-research (incidentally, one of the biggest swedish specialists on the subject is very gay himself, seeing him on tv turned my attention to this 'branch' of science) as it seems fairly interesting.

Hence why I wrote the things I did in parentesis. All research is good, as it gives us knowlegde. However we ourselves choose how to use that knowledge. The discovery of nuclear power is a typical example:
after Einstein came up with his formulae others pursued it's application to make bombs. wich was bad. Others yet used it to create powerplants supplying us with a high amount of much needed power (said powerplants are now becoming obsolete, as they have produced highly dangerous waste-products, and since other energy-sources are being invented) for our new high-tech society, and for making micro-waves, to heat our food faster.
I suppose it is all self-contradictory, as people will want to utilise the results of research for different things. But hey, that's existence for ya.
Now please continue the penguin-research. It doesn't appear as if they will come to any harm in it so far, so by all means let it step to the next phase. Will be very interesting to see what the contenta might be.

is it because of my insanely long absence due to troubles with paperwork, sand, and the US government? ...or do you just not know how to reply to such a topic...
