Selling old stuff

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

Selling old stuff

Post by Pissin' Poonani » Sat Feb 12, 2005 4:39 am

Helped my dad clean his loft out the other week, and now I find myself with a shed full of stuff which although we don't really want it, would be a shame to throw away.

We'd like to make a little money from it if possible (we've got a load of tools we want to buy, so every little helps), but I'm having trouble fnding someone who wants the stuff.

It's a varied assortment-a few boxes of books, a couple of boxes of videos, a small mahogany folding table, a load of horse brasses, some framed paintings-that kind of stuff. I've tried the local flea market, some book buyers in the Yellow Pages, house clearance companies, all to no avail, so I was wondering if you folks had any ideas? I can't be bothered with a boot sale, and ebay would be too much hassle (I don't mind breaking the items up for sale, eg: all the books to one person, videos to another etc, but I don't want to get into selling them individually).

I should imagine that I've pretty much exhausted my options, but you lot are cleverer than me so I figured it was worth a shot. :)

If I can't sell any of it, I suppose I could see if the charity shop wants any of it.

Cheers :)

I dunno about your country but here in Hungary there are lots of antiquity shops that buy all the garbage they can get. Sadly, the owners are usually like Swindle on steroids and will bargain you down before you could say "Mxyzptlk".

Wot BB said.

Now, I don't know what it's like 'roud your way, but if you was near me, I could point you in the direction of a good dozen second-hand shops, all with 'quaint' names: The Attic, Odds & Todds, The Secondhand Shop, etc.

But failing that, charity shops are usually a good bet for getting rid. Mostly, it'll fall into a bric-a-brac category, or if it's (s)crap, a skip.

Thanks guys :)

I thought about second hand shops-I thought my best option was the flea-market seeing as the stuff I'm looking to get rid of is the kind of stuff they carry, but when I phoned the guy wasn't interested.

I've decided to try a few bits on ebay-if it comes to nothing then no harm done.

Cheers :)
