Want to voice an opinion on Dubya's attack on SS?

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

Bottom line, the administration is using the same scare tactics it has in the war on terror and the war in Iraq. It's wheeling out the two word culture of "flat bust" which isn't true. We have an easy answer to the social security problem. Right now, deductions are capped at 90k. Were we to remove that cap so that the tax is equal to everyone and people paid their percent no matter what they made we could fund it fully. Also, were the government to stop borrowing it to fight a war, that would greatly help.

There are problems with social security and those of us who can invest elsewhere should. However, that does not mean we should dismantle a program that has improved the quality of life for so many seniors, disabled individuals and children who have lost a parent. The program works and does a great deal of good. Were Dubya actually concerned about helping us "save our future" he would be focused on Medicare and rising Health Care costs...a topic most of our European friends don't even have to discuss.

Linking to moveon.org as a reputable source is like reading the Koran to solidify your Christian beliefs.

It's called filling out a petition to be sent to Congress. Unless you'd like to write your own, most people prefer to allow others to do the writing for them. As for my sources, I didn't use Move On. I used information taken from Time Magazine and some governmental sources that I use to put information together for teaching my economics class.
