I think it's more a case of why anyone would bother with Netscape any longer? By going straight to source, you get a more up-to-date Gecko rendering agent (Netscape is usually a version behind) and access to lots of useful extras in the form of extensions.Predabot wrote:you can use themes in netscape, (it contains two standards, classic & chrome, or something like that) but you really just don't care about it?

Aye, 'tis true. The only programs I've ever skinned are WinAmp and Trillian.Predabot wrote:Hmm.. My point was it doesn't ask you, and therefore never suffers from the problem I outlined above.Metal Vendetta wrote:When you install Firefox a dialogue box opens up and says "Import favorites/bookmarks from Internet Explorer?"Hmm..not quite, it instead does it automatically, without asking, but it only does it once. I'm sure you can add more later on, never tried. You know what? Netscape doesn't do that!
As Does OperaRebis wrote:Netscape does this.Impactor returns 2.0 wrote:I use a download manager, so i can view downloads and stuff in a tab
Same again with OperaRebis wrote:Does this too.Impactor returns 2.0 wrote:.a tabbed browser edtion that opens links in a new tab

I think Opera ha sone of these somewhere as well or if not there is a pluginRebis wrote:Right-click, Close tab. Most of the features of Firefox were first developed by Opera - Tabbed Browsing, Mouse Gestures and other stuff. And the advertisments that everyone seems togo on about are barely noticable, in fact compared to my file menu, or my favourite links the ads are tiny and not noticable at all

It has a slightly shorter timeout when waiting for replies than IE, so on a sluggish connection (or accessing a slow site) you may notice it more.
One thing you can do is get Firefox to give you friendlier error pages. Type "about:config" into the address bar and press return.
Then jump to "browser.xul.error_pages.enabled" and set it to "true". You can also filter by "timeout" and adjust any of those values if you want.
Personally, I dislike this—I'd rather categorically be told that the fetch timed out.
There are lots of other preferences in there, they just aren't all in the main Preferences window because it would confuse the hell out of newbies.
No idea about the shortcuts... do you mean bookmarks?
To change skins, go to Tools > Themes in the program and click on "Get more themes".

Just got myself Firefox, and the little padlock icon at the bottom is open-when I click it it says 'Connection not encrypted-the website www.transfans.net does not support encryption for the page you are viewing. Information sent over the internet without encryption can be seen by other people while it is in transit.' Is this normal? Anything to worry about? It does this for every site I've looked at, and I'd like to know if it's safe to use this for checking my bank account etc?
I know, I'm a dunce.

It's because this site asks for information through forms (eg, the one I'm typing in now and for logging in) but doesn't provide a secure connection (https) to do so.
It's just Firefox's way of saying to be careful what sites you type personal information into. Once logged into a bank site, the padlock should be closed (and the background colour of the address bar should turn cream/yellow.)

Thanks Stu
I'm glad I bothered to try it out-tabbed browsing is nifty, and I got a couple of extensions too The best part is with a couple of clicks, I can have all my favourite pages load up at once. Ace.
I've found the skins fairly dissapointing, but they're free so not point in complaining I suppose!

Opera is quite nice and speedy, however in my experience it consumes resources faster than a Chav in a Burberry store and is just as unstable....
Firefox has good speed (especially when it's network connection settings are tweaked) and is very stable, i don't think it's ever crashed on me.
Netscape unfortunately lost ground with me when they went for the 'all in one' approach, forcing me to install a news/mail reader along with their browser. Firefox is damned good browser and nothing else.
all IMHO of course....

I dunno to be honest, it's been a long while since i touched a netscape installer... have been using pre-release Firefox builds for the last god-knows how long. i seem to remember it not giving me the option (or at least not presenting the option in any obvious way)... but how long ago/which version that was, i don't know...

Yeeesssss...Pissin' Poonani wrote: The best part is with a couple of clicks, I can have all my favourite pages load up at once. Ace.
Personally I have webcomics sorted into folders by day...
Tabs are something most people take to quickly if they have screenspace (they're a bit limited on 800x600 res but anything above is fine) and can't go back to working without. Having twenty IE windows open just isn't as useful as having a couple of Firefox windows open with appropriate tabs grouped together in each window. Great for research.
Don't see the point in skinning in general, as long as defaults are functional. The ability to fit five toolbar icons, the address bar and menus all on one row is very useful, though.
Personally I set the address bar so that typing words into it gives me a Google search rather than a Google "I'm feeling lucky"... if interested, just go to about:config and change keyword.URL to http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=
Plus you can right-click over the input boxes of search forms and add keywords. So typing "amazon transformers" or "ebay forgotten realms" into the address bar would then give me appropriate searches once the keywords are set up. Sodding invaluable once you're used to it.
It's a browser for power users, but catering to everyone.

To be honest (and you're all aware of how little I know about computers), I've found AOL to be really good. There was a time when I hated them-system crashes every 5 minutes were the norm-but I found out that was due to my lap-top not being up to the job. Since I've had my new pc it's done me proud.
I'm still lovin' the Fox too-great browser, and loads of really cool pointless guff as well-I have Weatherfox and the thing that shows you the current Department of Homeland Security terrorism threat level. Pointless yet fun.
