"Safe For Work" board styling/options ?

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

"Safe For Work" board styling/options ?

Post by Dead Head » Tue Jan 18, 2005 6:15 pm

(Viewing the website from home is fine, but....)

Is there some profile option to disable the display of board members' signatures, and also avatars?

The reason I ask is twofold. Firstly, I don't care about, for example, "who someone's favorite manga character is", et cetera, and actually find such signature images highly irritating. Secondly and more importantly, I'm at work, mostly, when I browse the Transfans forum, and the less conspicuous the site, the better. The same goes for the banner at the top of the site with Optimus beaming down from the top-left corner. A profile option to change these aspects of the forum would be welcomed.

Not in phpBB 2.0.x, unfortunately. phpBB 3.0.0 (recently replacing the phpBB 2.2 dev branch) will have this functionality, but isn't due until mid- next year.

I think would be be possible to hack a theme with none of the graphics, sigs, etc. I'll give it a go later if I get chance, but expect it to break if the main theme gets modified for any reason.

I thought this would be one of the responses. Blocking images is impractical as I use the web for work too, and as such require images to be shown.

you cant tell firefox to block images from just transfans.net - not all web sites.

Unfortunately my work system is a lock-down Solaris 8 box, running Netscape 4.79.

Just one small caveat: if a 'subSilverSFW' style appears in your Profile options, DON'T SELECT IT UNTIL I'VE CONFIRMED IN THIS TOPIC THAT IT'S SAFE TO DO SO. Otherwise you may find yourself unable to view the forum at all.

I'm surprised it renders the site at all; 4.xx has a nasty tendency to choke on stylesheets.

Anyway, the SFW theme seems to work and is there.

4.79 'works', albeit the forum is constantly shunted to the down and to righthand side of the browser window.

This certainly makes me realise how ridiculously large some people's sigs are...

I've done something about the mass of smilies in the posting window; can't do anything about images inlined into posts, I'm afraid.

how about using a text only browser like Lynx?
doesn't solaris come with that by default?
it's a real throw-back

Oh believe me, I've mastered the art of using both Links and Lynx in a terminal window, but it's really a last resort as they lack numerous features to be able to successfully use them on many websites. ;)

how about a short teatime break when you check your email and look at the forum?

people with computers do work at work too. At least you don't have the square-eyes from watching your screen all day ;)

This is great! Good work.

I miss Prime in the corner but I'll see him when I get home. ;) Much less conspicuous.

My JVP came into our store one day and walked up to my KM and said "Mike, I need to talk to you." Mikes response "Not time to talk, time to work." It has kind of rubbed off on me a little. I still try to say things like "Hey, lets speed it up so we can get home." or "Come on ya'll you're doing great, don't drop the ball now."

But sometimes it comes out as "OI! GET BACK TO WORK BEFORE I BREAK MY SIZE 13 1/2 SHOE OFF IN YOUR *** !"

But thats only when people are being stubborn or purposely taking thier time to milk the clock.

I like this one quite a bit. I mean, I don't necessarily have to see all of those signature images every single time either.

How about getting rid of the email buttons and such? And smilies?

Well not the smilies maybe. :)

I've done this for a small forum I'm running myself elsewhere (not TF stuff, just preparing for a summer language camp) and the way phpBB creates output in its core files that isn't easily accessible through the templates is a pain. There's a lot of abstraction due to language packs, etc.

We could cheat and simply replace the images with images of text if enough people want. Or cut the pictorial icons out of the images. That wouldn't take long... :)

Emoticon images are all handled centrally, though, not per style/template.

Roger that, Denyer, I've looked into those templates / language packs myself once, and it seems phpBB is getting overweight and complex.

miniBB is fun! :)

But yeah, good job on this one, I use it as standard now too.
