I need help with some Half-life2 errors.

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

I need help with some Half-life2 errors.

Post by Predabot » Sat Jan 15, 2005 1:03 am

Yeah, finally got me dirty hands on a half-life2 Vengeance, the crack didn't work on Win ME, but now that I have winXP it did. :) However, i seem to be getting a bit of a problem, I can only play for about 10minutes sometimes less sometimes more, before I get:

"C++ Runtime Error. Abnormal Program Termination".

Apparently after checking this on google I deduced that it's a problem with secondary auxiliary cards. Such as Soundblaster Live and the like, and if you have an asus motherboard. I have that and a soundblaster audigy.

Anybody know of the cure for this?

Theyre talking about the problem here, but I don't seem to understand the solution quite. I turned off my secondary (only one physical card, don't understand why there's two units) Radeon 9800 Pro and my Audigy. And used my sh*tty built-in sound, but it didn't help.

That's because your using one of Emporios sh*tty versions! :x I'm using the Vengeance release with cd-update, with CS:source and after that Protocolv7 with half-life deathmatch! :D Do you want a link to a torrent with the vengeance-release? It's good stuff.

You do know about the little trick of not shutting down the console when you start the game, and when playing and you get ai_disable write in console: "ai_disable 0"

NOTE!: I only have the "Abnormal Program Termination Error" with Half-life2, CS: Source works like a charm.

I have no end of trouble with radon cards -will never get one again.

make sure all your drivers on your sounds card are up to date.

If u were using ME before, is the motherboard old? it might not like your newer G and sound card.

Hmmm..well it's an Asus P4PE not sure about the year, but it's slightly old, yes. Doesn't even have a 8x AGP slot, but a 4x AGP. As for G 'n' S-cards they are both up to date. Can't really afford to change motherboard at the moment tho.

(Who can really? Oh..Impy...)

that might be wear the problem lays, the MB might just be a bit un-compatable with your new cards.

Like I said, ive had no end of trouble with ATI cards, they might be quick, but they feck up on almost every game.

Hmm?? Maybe they are a bit incompatable, but it works just fine with Doom3.

DOn't have an old gcard anywhere, no. But I do have an old integrated sound-card. Wich I have disabled in windows, and then disabled in Bios. However, using only my Audigy, seems to have acctually made it worse. I tried using only my integrated, and it may have worked a bit better, but it still crashed.

*NOTE!*
I just noticed this dutch site here, and there's a fella there that has the same problem, except that he has an nVidia card!! This does indeed prove that the problem might be far more deep-rooted than previously expected. I don't understand much of what theyre saying, but maybe Dylan can have a look at it and tell Impy what he thinks?

Strike my idiotic ramblings about Doom3 woring perfectly on my system, just like with HL2 I get a Visual Basic C++ error, but this time it's a buffer-run error apparently. Ideas anyone?? Could conflicting drivers create errors such as these? Cause I've got according to windows a secondary adapter, even tho there really is none, I don't have 2 Radeon cards wich it states.

EDIT: Prior to installing HL2, and after I had installed HL2 and it worked pretty good, I installed the latest version of the Java runtime evironment, can this have any impact whatsoever on my systems ability to play these games?

nope.

All i can suggest is u get the latest, motherboard, graphics card, sounds card, windows updates drivers.

Failing that i think a bit of your hardware, your MB is tol old for your g-card. a buffer error sounds like an information overflow, probably you g-card sending back to much across your MB or somthing.

Hmm, I've got the latest drivers for the G-card, only a few days old acctually, and I've filled up on all the windows updates that I can get ahold of, even put in the new .net-waddayacallit about an hour ago. The soundcard tho, well it's an Audigy1-card, so I think the drivers I loaded for it about 2 weeks ago is the latest, I believe theyre probably not releasing anything after that. And the motherboard..well, it's a few years old, and it's only got AGP 4x not 8X so that might be the problem, but I was under the impression that it would work like a charm with backwards-compatibility..

some bits of hardware just dont get on with others tho.

my mate has a good g-card, and on certain games, at certain exact points it crashs the machine. we know its his old MB, about 4 years old now I think.

DAMN! This could be costly to correct with other words! :x I seriously cannot afford a motherboard. My G-card cost me over 200 dollars.. I'm broke.
