Macworld: Mac Mini and iPod Shuffle

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

Good ol' AMD.

Not forgetting of course also Sun systems, who produce a lot of graphical workstations for industrial applications, like aerdynamic analysis on cars etc.

EDIT-

MF- that second link contains a sshot of a UNIX/Linux system? I'm assuming they are using some Macs for some purposes (i.e. this new application they developed) and UNIX/Linux for the actual hardcore animation.

And the first link sounds a bit dubious- I'd be surprised if they'd scrap a team of Linux systems which would have had a fortune spent on them in terms of software and customisation just because they felt like switching to the latest apple system? That would be a big move to justify financially. Have to keep my eyes open for developments on that.

the first link was how Pixar are switching to G5's - if u carry on reading its at the finnal cut show - thats DV editing software, the best bit of software around for DV editing, thats why they are using Macs.

Shake is also a wonderfull bit of Compositing software ($3000) - recently a link between Alias Wavefront who make Maya and apple was made. this is great for CG artists. intergration between tools speeds up workflow.

this is where it gets a bit confusing. when you work on a system at this level, you would do your work on the scene on your chosen platform, for example I know alot of big companys run Redhat Lunix for Maya as they get substantial render speed increases, and then you out put to your huge UNIX servers.

the UNIX servers etc... are your number crunchers, made for rendering high ress frames of information, lots of compsited layers, and compressing them at high speed.

Maya and a G5 is a good stable platform, and used alot now as a workstation.
interesting statistic here tho, %75 of the video games industry use 3D Max, its cheap'ish (well £1500) and is a PC only product..

your render network or 'render farm' will still generally be UNIX based tho.
I cant see any other effective way of linking 200 cpus.

I really want to set up a redhat system with at least 4cpus... prolly cost a few grand.

I dream of 64cpus... seriously I do :p
