Hes a moderate, to many the sensible choice after afrafat and doesn't have Afrafats b#####d past and bad blood with Israel. he also already has world leaders battling to appear with him (A good sign he will have infulence) but will have a huge battle to get extreamist groups under control though he clearly hasd thw will of the people. He got 62.3% of the vote compared to 19.8% for his nearest rival.
That should be good for peace talks. Lets hope he can get peace talks on track and heading somewhere. Ariel Sharon replied positively.Lets hope actions follow.
The new Palestinian leader: Mahmoud Abbas

Yes, Sharon is something of a criminal (he's under suspicion/investigated for some shady corrution bussiness, and even the death of a judge(!) or something similar, as we speak) psychopath and really is the last person that should lead the Israeli in a time like this. Naturally, the Yankees support his regime whole-heartedly.
On a positive and fitting point, the EU is apparently to be giving strong support to Mahmudd Abbas government. You silly yanks..
