Today I discovered a great song.....

Don't laugh.

I reasonably liked the original. Not offensive enough to hate. Clearly successfully done. Whitney Houston at her most 'epic'.

But I've read many articles or 'greatest songs' list or references that claimed the original was better. I'd say I wondered why but I never thought enough of the song to give it further thought.

I randomly heard it today after getting a C.D over crimbo called 'Sad love songs' or something.

Now I hate country and just previously viewed the singer as some sort of redneck pre-Pamler, Pamler Anderson.

But damn this song is fresh, passionately sung and really, and I mean really intimate. The Whitney Houston version is poorer after hearing this one. By a mile I never rated it much and actually dislike it after hearing a much superior version that came before. The WH was loud, over produced and over epic. It didn't strike a cord. It's too.... plastic. It was a track that was put together not sung.

When Parton sung it..... it was personal; it felt personal and had to be listened to straight after. It made me think deeply of my own past relationships. It has a natural quality but was still perfectly sung, with emotion. It struck a chord. I felt the emotion in the voice. It also transcended its genera.

A sign of a great song?

As good as any.

I'm not claiming it will break my top 5 lists. But it did make me feel strongly emotional over hearing a piece of music. Something I can't recall for a long, long time. It was that good.

I hope you agree or are willing to post musical experiences that stuck a chord with you or had a significant emotional experience for you.

Of course I agree. Dolly Parton is most likely one of the greats in Country music, and it's good that during the last few years she's started to get credit for her work.

I skimmed the post as I just wanted to slate the pigs ear of a song.

Deary me!

As far as emotional songs... I listen to a few select CDs or tunes when I'm going out on a bender to get me in the mood.

These are Purple Rain, DJ Yoda's how to cut and paste 80's edition, Timo Mass, KLF and a big hip-hop playlist I've compiled over a while.

Emotive stuff: jeff Buckley is quite good, I also listen to a lot of movie soundtrack stuff. That and trip hop with few lyrics get me in a good working mood. Time flies by.

Today I discovered a great singer. Martin Grech. His album came out in 2002(!) but I only just heard it. Had a song in a Lexus ad or something.

Its great.

Hmmm, lessee. The first song that jumps to mind is Buffy St Marie's (acoustic) version of "Up Where We Belong". It's a lovely, pure song on it's own and this version has got it's little flaws and inflections... that's what makes it sound real, that's what I like about it. Because it's acoustic, there's no distracting kibble either.

I've heard the movie version and that never struck me the same way this one did. It's just way too polished for my liking.
