Be A Moviestar

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

Heh.

By the way, Sidestreaker, I didn't see you anymore (and I did sell the tickets, so unless you walked by in invisible mode, you really weren't there).

A shame you missed it, it was a fun evening. Maybe next time!

Hey Richard, sounds good to me.

I'm not sure if anyone took any pictures this time around.

The Be A Moviestar auditions are this Tuesday, learning my monologue now.

Alright, the short version is:

Unfortunately, I did not make it to the second round of auditions.

I had a great day, I'm very grateful for this opportunity, it completely sucks big time and beyond I didn't make it, but on the brightside the jury told me that in time and with practice I might be good enough for tv. And they freaking looked sincere when they told me that.

All in all, a positive experience.

Thanks Eline.

Here's a report, copied from my journal:

----------------------------

2672

Let's start with the short version:

Unfortunately, I did not make it to the second round of auditions for that 'Be a Moviestar' program.

Now that's out of the way, I can tell about the experience in more detail.

Overall, it was great fun. Out of 4500 people they preselected a couple of hundred, including myself. Not quite as crowded as the auditions for Idols, but still quite a number of individuals. The place was Hotel Arena in Amsterdam. They interviewed me about my expectations, and I think that went well enough. With luck (or bad fortune?) bits of that will be shown on television.

Then I was called to the rooms in which the auditions were held. First had to wait a while, and one by one, everyone before me was dismissed, beginners as well as pro's. Very harsh experience.

My own audition went fairly well I'd say, though I slipped on my lines a couple of times. Did them too fast. The two casting directors seemed to have faith in me though, as they kept on giving pointers and let me do the monologue four times. Appearantly, that was unusual already. Unfortunately, I couldn't quite grasp the direction they wanted me to go in. Less agressive but more energy? The annoying part was that I had practiced the scene so often that I had somehow come up with the 'perfect' performance, at least according to me of course. It was real tricky to incorporate their advice. After that, a one-liner and a couple of emotions, and then it was over.

They had certainly given me more than the 5 minutes I had. They even told me they regretted the fact I wasn't able to work with their directions, for they felt I have it in me (and have the looks) to do something with television. They stressed I should continue taking acting lessons.

So on the one hand, I'm really happy with their positive advice - they are professionals, and expect with practice I could get somewhere.

On the other hand, I simply failed because I couldn't give them what they wanted. It was not that I was a white guy while they were looking for a black guy - I failed to listen to their directions. Made me feel pretty incompetent.

It was a tough audition - this is a national search, they want the most talented actor in the Netherlands. In that sense, I'm a proud loser to those 50 or so people who got through this first round. But man! It was such an amazing opportunity! It sincerely is one of the biggest disappointments in my life. Sounds shallow, and I am the first to admit that most of my life has been unbelievably fortunate. It's just that I didn't expect this to hurt as much as it does. Damn.

There's more I want to write about, but this entry ends here.
