3 min silence

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

If this topic is for the Asian disaster I would say, show a little more of respect for all the people who died...

In all honesty I don't see the point in having a topic dedicated to posting "..."

The thoughts and intent behind it are good... but as a thread on a messageboard it just doesn't work imo. :uhh:

TBH the whole 3 minute silence I think is daft. To recognise it's a bad thing doesn't take silence and I think the best way to show 'solidarity' or whatever one would wish to call it is to help, to take responsibility for the well-being of others.

Silences are one of those things which society seems to feel it has to do whenever something bad happens, which I find strange because does that mean if we don't have the silence it's somehow less tragic? Something is only a truly awful thing if we keep quiet for X minutes?

Or maybe it's meant to make all the unfortunates who lost their lives feel better?

If I were feeling particularly cynical I'd actually say that society as a whole does them to make ourselves feel better, but that's probably another discussion.

No reason people shouldn't do it of course, I'd just suggest (for myself) there are better ways of dealing with things.

And I'm far too cynical and jaded anyway.

Maybe the "3 min silence" doesnt help at all. But that doesnt mean that I would put a bunch of nonsense in the topic in question. What would somebody who lost it all feel with childish comments like many of the previous ones?? Its like you writing about your grandma dying and I putting a big :D I cant do anything to change it but at least I could show concern in some way.

i quite like teh idea of the silence - the idea of everyone taking time to refkect on what has happened - as one, appeals to me. People don't take enough time to reflect in general i think, so actually taking the time to contemplate the loss of others is not a bad thing IMO - you never know how many people may have donated after pondering the enormity of what happened.

That said the way they keep upping the time seems a bit churlish - its not a frigging competition.

The upping of the time frame is something that annoys me too- apparently this is 1 minute more tragic than Sept. 11th.

As I said I've nothing against the silence as such, it doesn't hurt anyone. That said I don't see how it helps anyone either.

Emphasis' the situation. What is lost, how lucky we are, etc.

I work in a school and trust me, a bottom year 8 group only realised the significance of such an event (The same occurs on 11/11) as a 3 min silence was needed. And it's a rare event for them to realise the meaning of respect or the tragic importance of a event beyond being beaten by a friend on a PS2. It's the only time they can reflect, pay respect be educated on what has happened. Imagine what a even bigger disaster the whole earthquake could be it people didn't realise that they were events so important we should give 1, 2 or 3 minutes to reflect on the impoirtance. If tragic events are not given some context then how can people grow up to realise that people need to be helped?
It worked beautifully.

I explained what it was about for the 10 minutes before, and they showed their respect and admitted the silence was a good time to give respect and agreed to donate to the school fund.

It alright saying a silence isn't practical, prehaps among humanists with some degree of inteligence it's not needed but among a huge porportion of the population it's a way of them showing respect and meaning it where they would otherwise not realise and never care.

Well as I indicated I'd say for society as a whole silences are a way of comforting ourselves that we have actually 'done' something when we haven't really.

I think it's quite a happening or statement if so many people reflect on something at the same time.

Karl, I understand what you mean, but I know for a fact that I personally do not feel any 'better' after such minutes of silence. Far from it, in fact.

But you can't really speak for society as a whole, being only one person. You can only speak your aspects and pov on society as a whole. imo anyway.

I agree with aspects of this:
Jetfire wrote:among a huge porportion of the population it's a way of them showing respect and meaning it where they would otherwise not realise and never care.
As I remember silences for such doing so for me when I was younger. Nowadays I participate when/if a similar situation comes about more to show respect for the individuals around me than for any specific reason (though yes, the specific reason is a part of it of course)... imo if it gets people thinking, it's a good. I mostly prefer to contemplate issues on my own time though (I'm currently considering entering nursing and a part of what brought that about was the contemplation of volunteering for overseas disaster relief with a charity organization. I don't need the nursing but it'd probably help, and I need some form of goal to work towards)... and little things like this are what led up to that frame of mind.

The upping of the time is a bit confusing though. I've not encountered it myself. I'd not actually encountered any mention of the 3 minutes the topic started under in the everyday either.

Hence my use of the words "I'd say..." rather than "It is fact that...".

Muchas gracias to Mob for the Sig, proving why he's called 'King'.

The "i" in "Señior" from "Señior's Covenant" is intentional and part of a stupid & cheesy inside joke from '02. Thank you for your concern.
