HELP! NEED IMMEDIATE XP HELP!

Post by Predabot » Thu Dec 30, 2004 8:36 pm

AHHHHHHHHHHGGGGHH!!! :x I was finnally able to install Win XP on this comp, but even tho I used the max available drive-space to do this partition for C:/windows, to my horror, when the bloody OS was done and started,

and I checked the hd-space, I noticed that it had EVILLY made it so to be a 2gig partition, and not a 20 GIG wich it bloody h*ll should be!!!

Why, oh why is it that compared to all the Win9x systems that WinXP is such a messed up c*nt to install!!???

I'm just about out of hd-space now, after putting in all those focking Security Updates that this dire sh*te needs. But please, what si the solution to my problem??

Karl..anyone...?

EDIT: Oh, please, just post an answer to this quickly. :( I've only got 30mb of hd-space left so I really must reformat this sh'te you know? Maybe this info might help, the hd is a: IBM Deskstar manufactured in June of 2000.

did u set the partion in XP after you had set XP up? using a logical partions setup - if so you can change it via drive management.

Ive never had a problem with XP, and I have multiple drives and partions.

im guessing you typed 2000 megs not 20'000 megs for 20GB ? :D

The partition was made prior to setting up XP, with Xp's installer, and it said that max space available was 2008mb, and now that you say it, that must be the problem. But why does it believe that the max size of space to add to this partition is 2008mb? :eyebrow: I don't get that.

Firstly I formated it with the old partition C:, but since that installation just couldn't work for some reason (That was a different CD by the way, it was probably corrupt). I took a different XP version with Service Pack1 and used that instead and removed that partition and took the option of making a new one in the now huge unpartitoned space, and I chose the max size available, 2008mb...

Your drive probably needed repartitioning when you installed XP.

We should be able to resize it without formatting it. Leastways Linux will resize XP partitions. Give me 5 mins to go look.

This utility should solve your problem. i believe it comes with XP.

Read the commands, and use the DOS prompt to input them in safe mode. Whilst this utility won't 'resize' partitions, it can make them bigger. Use it to extend the partition you've installed windows on to take up the whole disk.

EDIT- or if that fails (and from reading the notes it probably will) try one of these.

Good link there, Mr. Lynch. :) I'll try that.

EDIT: It's 20 gigabytes big.

Well, I got the comp into safe mode and followed the instructions, but naturally it didn't work, just like Karl predicted. So wich one of the partition-tools should I use? I only have 30 megs of space mind you, so some of em is already out of the question.

it doesnt make sense that - it sounds like it never formatd your drive in the first place unless it was very small?
id start again. its like its installed to what you had left over from before.

odd. very odd.

Very odd indeed. The last time I managed to get Win XP installed it did the exact same thing. And that time I only had 2gigs left when I did it, and thought that was the problem, so this time I made sure that I had over 12 gigs of free space before I attempted to install XP, so that can't really be the problem can it?? :eyebrow:

on a 20GB drive I wouldnt partition it to be honest.. XP can get large quickly.

But to start with, when u format the drive (NTFS) I dont think its doing all your drive. perhaps just a bit you had partioned before. and so u are installing to that small part again.

Blah! :p I used to have, for a long time ago a small 2gig partition, but that was when I had Win98, that partition was deleted and removed and what not, more than a two years ago.. I've had this one big 20gig every iota of the disk partition since then.

Well, now I went and did it. I once again installed WinME until I could get me some qualified "in the flesh" hacker-dude help. I just couldn't bare sitting at a comp with a 2gig drive. So now atleast I can surf around a bit until then.

Lucky rich bastard. But wait, if you had the same problem like me it wouldn't matter if you had 500 gb! You'd still only be able to utilise 2gigs! HAHAHAHAAHHAHAHA!!!!!!

thats so bizzare. ive never had a problem with XP on anything, must have installed it onto over 20+ machines, and some have loads of partions and stuff.

all i can assume is your not formating the entire drive or somthing.

I don't know, after last time we talked, and before I put Me on this comp, I used good ol Fdisk and made a new fine clean 100% partition, and then formated that, and put ME on it. Works like a charm, and it shows the correct space and all. No problem what so ever. This disc or the current comp configuration has never had ANY problem with the Win9x OS's only XP. But I'm thinking, the only reason I'm interested in XP is cause of the new games, DOOM3 etc, and if I'm not misstaken they're also playable on win 2000 wich XP is built on? Please say yes..

Hope no one minds, thought seeing as this thread is about computers I'd ask my question here rather than start a new topic.

I'm having a bit of a mouse problem: when I'm on t'internet (I'm pretty sure it's just the internet as my missus has just played 7 straight hours of 'Theme Hospital' with no problems), the pages I'm trying to view start randomly and wildly scrolling up and down at light-speed.

I've tried cleaning the tracker-ball-thing, and the wheels and gizmos that it moves inside the mouse, but the problem still persists. I've tried looking at my mouse settings to see if somehow I'd buggered something up (not likely as I've never been into that bit before), and everything looks fine.

So-anyone else had this problem, or is it just a case of my mouse being knackered? Cheers guys.

:)

Could be the mouse- I had a similar problem when trying to use my Microsoft USB Intellimouse through the PS/2 connector. It never did it when I plugged it directly into the USB socket, however.

I'd suggest looking up the make of your mouse and trying to replace the drivers, or failing that getting a USB mouse, they're less than 10 pounds in most shops now.

Cheers Karl :)

I'll look for the drivers in a bit, although my new-found method of repeatedly smashing the mouse against the desk in anger seems to be working at the mo.
