Asian Tsunami

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

Asian Tsunami

Post by Kaylee » Mon Dec 27, 2004 5:16 pm

23,000 dead. And rising.

[composite word including 'f*ck'] me.

What I found amazing was the front page of todays The Times- it looks like a group of people swimming in rough seas surrounded by debris... it was only when I read the caption I realised it was a town centre. The debris was in fact the tops of buildings.

And nobody knew or saw it coming... the first anyone knew was a 30' wall of water heading from out at sea.

Good God.

That number is only gonna get higher. The amount of highly populated land affected by the earthquake/tsunami is simply staggering.

I'm thinking 40k-60k before this is over.

I got a call last night that the last contact with two of my very close friends was tsunami central. I was totally bricking myself that they were dead, calling round anyone that might have any news of them...finally found out this morning that they called the UK and they're alive...Scared the crap out of me.
I would have waited a ******* eternity for this!!!!

23,500 is the most recent figure.

Like Nat said, expect it to double in the next couple of days.

on a positive note I noticed Rielly (hope I spelt it right) was on whether a Tsunami could hit the USA and so maybee the goverment will stop pretending Iraq is a threat and instead realise all it takes is a bunch of explosives on one of the Canary Islands (wouldn't be hard to smuggle them on) and the Entire East Coast would be wiped out

As for on topic I think as soon as collection ways become available I'll donate some money to this - It shows just how powerful nature is and how even though we think we are invincible we are still governed by nature

Red Cross and Care International are accepting donations to help rescue survivors and provide for the projected millions who are now homeless.

Man, screw CNN

(Anchor)
"Can you tell us the status of the resorts, which ones are destroyed, which ones are still standing?"

(Field Reporter)
"Um, the VILLAGES around here have been completely obliterated, thousands of people have lost thier homes"

(Anchor)
"And the state of the resorts? How are they holding up with the tourists?"

(Field Reporter)
"Many people have lost everything they have and will never be able to financially recover"

(Anchor)
"Apparently air travel is back to normal now and tourists should be able to get home with no problems"

(Field Reporter)
*sigh* "Yes, and the weather is back to the serene scene that tourists flock here to enjoy"

(Anchor)]
*smiling now* "Ah thank you for your coverage"

WTF?

I think the Canadian coverage was a bit more fair. They showed the tourist footage, showed the tourist interviews but also pointed out that millions of people actually living in the country had eitrher died or were left homeless.

Donated to the Red Cross, at any rate. left with the thought that had I not seen the coverage I probably wouldn't have though. That bothers me a bit for some reason.

The singer from my favourite band is missing (he's swedish - and I felt all empty when I read it. Maybe it's just me being a wuss ) :(

Alot of swedish people died/are missing, down there.
So I've spent the entire morning reading on a big swedish forum. People are talking about how they don't know where their best friend is, and that their girlfriend is in the hospital, etc.
It's horrible to read about it.
Can't believe I'm still here.

This is some scary stuff, apparently the earthquake in the ocean that did 8.9 on the richter-scale, that caused all of these Sunamis, unleashed a power equivalent of 1000 nuclear bombs. What I wanna know right now is how is Aaron doing?! :( The blast must have been felt in Singapore too, considering it's proximity to Thailand, even tho it probably wasn't even close to the fury that those poor people getting close contact of the Tsunamis (India  , Sri Lanka, Thailand and Indonesia) I think the reason he hasn't made a post here is cause he's been called in to help, being a reservist and all. I'd like to hear how he and his family is doing.

I was going to make a topic about this (as ussual) but my computers registry broke down completely, so I had to use Scanreg to correct it.

EDIT: OH MY FREAKING GOD!!!
I just checked the news, and the current estimate of killed people is 60 000! :!: And as a side-note, one of my second-best friends female friends mother was killed in Thailand.

Two tectonic plates under the Indian Ocean sheared along their boundary, resulting in a sudden difference in the depth of the ocean above it. The ocean, being a liquid tends to prefer having its surface more or less smooth, and so took exception to a long raised region of water. This region did what any liquid would do and tried to flatten itself, by spreading out as rapidly as possible. To the observer, the edge of this raised region would look like a fast-approaching wave, the tsunami, which, although travelling very rapidly, still took several hours to reach the Asian shores.

In the Pacific Ocean, these tsunamis occur much more regularly, due to the congregation of multiple tectonic plates and their frequent activities, and so there are early warning systems installed. The Indian Ocean, having much fewer tectonic plates, has no such system installed.

THe Atlantic Ocean, by contrast, although having a greater number of tectonic plates than the Indian Ocean, but slightly fewer than the Pacific, has an entirely different system of tectonic activity and the threat of tsunamis there are extremely remote.

I'll bet CNN didn't say anything about that either. ;)

BTW, I'm glad everyone's correctly calling it a Tsunami, and not a Tidal wave, as a tidal wave is the gentle lapping of the tide on the shore caused by the Moon's gravitational pull on the Earth's oceans.

Apparently they detected the seismic vibrations in the USA with hours to spare to get people evacuated... but quite simply there was nobody for them to call to warn them.

Actually, to thier credit, they stated almost EXACTLY that same statement

I thought Tidal Wave was a giant stupid Transformer that spent half of his time as a snazzy jumpsuit for Megatron or Scorponok. :D

I LIIIIIIVE!! :D

Seriously though, I had to sift through the newspapers several times before I realised just how lucky we were here in Singapore. I have no idea how we avoided all that. I just realised how little I really know about how these things work, but hot DAMN I'm glad I didn't take the kids overseas.

My dad was all livid about the tsunami footage on TV, with the water reaching the freaking rooftops and all. I don't think he knows anyone living in the area though. but god help all of them anyway.

Predabot, I haven't heard any news of Singapore troops being sent to the area myself, but if they do it's usually the medical corps that go, like all those other times in the Middle East. Being just cross-trained in medical stuff doesn't give me the qualifications for that sort of thing. The most we have is another two weeks in camp starting March thereabouts.

I'm starting to lose hope.
I met him about three years ago - he's a great guy.
It's hard not knowing. "Maybe, maybe not..." It's killing me.

And my cousin might've lost a friend - nobody's heard from him yet.

I can't even imagine how hard this must be for the victims friends and families.
Especially for those that don't even know if their loved ones are alive or not.
Can't believe I'm still here.

Saw in a newspaper yesterday that Jet Li (one of my wushu heroes) was missing too, somewhere in that region.

You're ok, man! :) Now that's good news, so Thailand absorbed pretty much all of the waves so to speak? I must say that I'm surprised, how does that work really?

Maybe Rebis can check the map and the way the shockwaves from the shake moved and such, and we'll probably know how that worked out. :)

I'm glad that you and youre family is OK, cause on the news when you look at what the powers unleashed could, and did, do, you certainly gain respect for mother earths awesome power.

Had Singapore been hit by a 30 meter Tsunami, the big city wouldn't have looked very pretty afterwards...

But did you feel the acctual Eath-quake at all then? I realise that it was very far away, but common, it was 8,9 on the scale! It was the biggest mur-mur the earth had made in atleast 40 years! (One of the biggest ever in recorded history apparently) Surely you felt a small rumble, tingle atleast, in the ground?
