Since it's been awhile since my last poll....

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

....I thought it would be fun to throw this little question out there. So, what is your favorite book in Lord of the Rings? Note that I said book, not movie.

Hopefully this will get some buzz going.

I've always held the first book in the highest regard. As a kid, the chase from Hobbiton to Bree, Bree to Weathertop, and Weathertop to Rivendell was riveting reading and the black riders were genuinely scary.

In addition, seeing the rise and fall of the nine companions is just incredible reading and as I am an avid D&D player, it's easiest to visualize how D&D grew out of Fellowship of the Ring.

Obviously that's not to say the other books aren't good or have their own benefits as well...

That being said, I also think the Fellowship movie was by far the best.

I thin I Watched 2 towers and return of the king about 3-4 times each but ive watched fellowship about 20 times.

it just seems to flow better as a story.

funnily enough I havent felt the urge to return to hobit land for sometime, where as starwars continues to drag me back more often...

books wise i like ROTK best - i couldn't stop reading it, conversely Fellowship is a slog for the fisrt 200 pages or so IMO.

Fellowhip remains the best film for me tho.

soon... soon...

Fellowship a slog for the first 200 pages? You get into the pipe weed when reading it Besty?

Anyway, ROTK is my favorite of the books, though Fellowship ranks a close second.

I can't say anything about the films until I actually see ROTK.
