So, Alien VS Predator Requiem is coming up.

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

So, Alien VS Predator Requiem is coming up.

Trailer.

"Apparently set after the first AVP movie, a predator ship crash lands in the woods near a small town. Most likely the ship from the last movie, this crash unleashes a horde of aliens and the new PredAlien onto the populace.

A lone predator is sent to clean up this mess. This commando is tasked with the responsibility of wiping away any evidence of predator or ailen presence on the planet, and unlike the other Hunters shown in the other movies, will stop at nothing to accomplish his task. He destroys anything in his way.

"He is a battle-scarred veteran who uses his brain more than his brawn. He carries scars of previous [Cleaning] campaigns. One of his mandibles has been melted off from a previous encoutner with acided blooded aliens. you can tell he's been through a lifetime of battles. And he wears no armor - he doesn't need it!"

He also sports a bad-ass arsenal, including two shoulder-mounted cannons, a bullwhip made from pieces of Aliens tails, implosion bombs, and more.

It also will attempt to tie together the timeline between the Predator and Aliens movies. It is to be set after the first two Predator movies, but before the Aliens franchise, and promises to tie the two together."

It's rated R. Will we see Predators and Alien ruin peoples faces?
Lets hope so!

A load of pointless fun no doubt. But if aliens came to present day Earth wouldn't they have heard of them in the Alien movies?

I do like the use of real in camera effects over CGI which they seem to be opting for most of the time when realising the creatures.

Nice. Everytime I see that commerical, I'm like, "So what exactly IS the 'R' for?"

Return? Revolution? Requiem? Ravage?

Now I know. Thanks, Ob. :D

I remember watching the original Rambo trailer when it was released and thought 'Sweet Jesus tits this is gonna be a bloody movie of magnificant proportions' (I have a wordy inner-monologue)

Then a couple weeks later and I saw the original AvPR trailer and holy balls.....im all giddy with anticipation. Its gonna be a good 2 months for mah movie enjoyment!

SPOILERS**********************************

Could have been better. My biggest gripe is w/ the aliens franchise is that they need to go back to the formula in Aliens (the second movie). Have lots of aliens, don't try and give them hoakey personalities etc..., send in a bunch of marines and have a blood bath. Instead they are alway trying to throw in some hoakey philosophy or half assed character development. The philosophy in aliens was simple (corporations put money over human dignity sometimes) and so were the characters, but it worked. This movie spent way too much time developing characters that nobody cared about. In aliens we had hardcore Ripley as the main protagonist, here we had emo pizza delivery boy.

What they should have done w/ this film is have the town overun by aliens and their hive structures by the time the predators get there. Send in the marines first, then send in a group of predators. Let havic reign. I want to see a group of 100 aliens attack a predator at once, not 3 or 4 at a time. You can only see that so many times before it gets repetitive. Predator kills three aliens in sewer, then in shop, then in hospital, then in house and so forth..... it gets dull and where is the big stuff? I realize the one on one w/ the pred-alien thing was supposed to be the climax, but all I'm saying is we could have seen more.

Instead we had a limited group of aliens who were just setting up shop. At least this one didn't try to got pg13 like the last.

Also, more about predator society could have been given. They are clearly setting that up for the next film, but it would make them more cohesive if we got at least a basis now.

The Alien/predator creature not laying eggs was stupid and didnt make sense in the context of the rest of the franchise. I don't want to see alien french kisssing people, I want to see people sewn into a wall begging for death. The pregnant woman has two aliens? cmon that was just cheesy.

Don't get me wrong this movie was entertaining, but could have been so much better. At points this film ended up feeling more like the latest scream installment than an Alien or Predator movie. The trailer and the first five minutes were definitely a little misleading.

I agree that it could've been better - but I also believe that this is the best we'll get.

As you said: the Predalien making out with people was a bit "WTF?!", but what the hell, I was expecting that kind of ****.

I thought the Predator was badass, and I liked the action scenes. So I'm happy with what I got. :)
I wouldn't say no to a Alien VS Predator movie done by James Cameron and Ridley Scott though

Edit: I've just watched Aliens. The awesomenes of it nearly brought me to tears.

I hope it isn't the best we'll get. I wonder if budget was the main issue here. The first one did alright but wasn't a smash.

I've still got hope for this franchise. It's on the up and up just needs to cut down on the cheese factor.

It was like 10 times better than the first -not too tough to do after all.

Only a few comments:

How can you possibly go to the sewers to pick up a couple of keys!!?!!!! Wouldnt be easier to make a copy?

Didnt care a bit about the humans, they could have been made of cardboard and had a better portrayal.

So there shall be always a ripley doppelganger? -the woman soldier.

Now the aliens grow to full size in like 10 minutes?

I wanted the pizza boy to be cut in half -and the chick to survive, although she was a bitch.

Well I loved it. Random human fodder with a typical modern day movie stereotype bunch. Very little plot, and Aliens spreading fast with a lone predator on the hunt. Which is what I really liked. I was always more a fan of predator than aliens, and if you think about it, how many hunters would knowingly walk into a situation where they had to battle hundreds of their prey at once? Its much more likely that they'd seperate them off and take care of them no more than 3 at a time. The movie was way more than I hoped for, and I'm willing to overlook the minor flaws as it kept me happily entertained for the duration.

I never get this, they should get back to "X" format for the movie. Why? If I want to watch Aliens I can go back and rewatch Aliens. I'd rather they at least try something new, even if it fails, than just rehash the same old thing. When movies are just rehashed it takes away from the original.

I have no problem w/ trying something new. There was really nothing new here though. They basically combined the Aliens franchise w/ every teen slasher flick out there.

Yeah it would be best for a hunter to take on its prey in small groups, but the whole point of aliens is that they are bugs and they swarm. Try attacking an ant hill and see if you can take them out three at a time.

I wasn't saying we should have a remake of aliens, but there were certain concepts in that movie that would be really cool to reproduce on earth. The potential is just a lot more than these movies have thus far delivered.

That being said, this was a huge step up from the first.

I meant something different with the franchise, while staying true to the basics. Ok, it wasn't original but still, at least they're making an effort, especially on the predator part. And the I think the point of the movie was the situation was assessed and it was decided that a full colony couldn't be established and hunting/cleanup was possible. In the first movie (poor as it was) it was shown that if the infestation gets out of control it'd be more likely that the predators would nuke everything. The idea of AvP is pretty much that the predators cut the aliens off from making full sized colonies so they can use them to hunt. Wheras the point of aliens was that there was a well established colony and the people sent in had no prior knowledge about the species. Of course, most of the AvP stories seem to be about when the hunt/setup for the hunt goes wrong.

Anyway, the movie was a big step in the right direction. It'd be nice if next time they set it in the future, really bringing it all together. maybe even post-ressurection.

In Alien and Aliens it takes like 50 - 60 minutes before we even get to see an alien.
This leaves lots of room for (human) character development, and gives us a picture of who-is-what inside the group. Then when chaos erupts we get to see how those different characters react to the situation (in Alien, Ripley's status within the group changes when the alien shows its face, etc.).

Now, Alien and Aliens are between 120 - 140 minutes long. They had brilliant directors (and probably good scripts), good actors and so on. A lot of puzzle pieces fell together perfectly.

The odds of that happening again are very slim.
Look at Alien 3 which, IMO, had great potential - but one messed up puzzle piece broke it (even Spider-Man 3 and Pirates 3 fell flat, even though they had the same cast, director, etc).

This is, in part, why I am satisfied with AvP 2. 90 minutes of mindless action. Nothing more, nothing less (on the other hand, you should never settle with less). A step in the right direction, if nothing else.

But what would a good AvP movie look like?
In Alien, Aliens and Predator it's Human VS One unknown enemy. The only motivation we need for the Unknown Enemy is "It wants to kill you".
In AvP we need to know why the Predator wants to kill the aliens. This was presented in a ****** way in AvP 1 (I don't know if I remember it correctly but doesn't the latino dude just read some weird ass hieroglyphs and that's it?). It was done better in AvP 2 (the badass Predator goes on a clean up mission. Short, simple).
Or maybe we, the audience, don't need to know why the Predator is out there hunting the aliens?
Anyways... I believe a good AvP movie needs to be at least 120 minutes, with 50 minutes of character development and **** like that.
Then an hour of chaos, confusion and fear.
But as I said, a lot of puzzle pieces are needed for this to work.

How would you do an AvP movie?

****, I have no idea what this post means - I've been randomly typing on it the last hour. Just ignore it if it doesn't make sense.

Utter, utter crap. On every level.

Boring, shoddily made, senseless. Rubbish.

Seemed to go out of its way to hide everything. No drama, no tension, awful action sequences. Half-arsed attempts to characterise one-dimensional humans with character arcs that go nowhere.

The [composite word including 'f*ck'] was the Predator up to? What was with that blue stuff? Yeah, go to great lengths to destroy the evidence, then when a human spots you doing it, skin him and leave him for everyone to find. [composite word including 'f*ck'] off with that.

What was with the Predalien chucking eggs down pregnant bitch's throat? And they come out as actual chest bursters? What happened to the egg-facehugger routine?

**** script, **** acting, **** direction. Too much close-up and quick cuts... I'm guessing to hide how **** the Predalien looked.

No ******* tension. For [composite word including 'f*ck']'s sake. I was bored. BORED. I expected it to be crap, but I expected to have a laugh at the brutal comedy deaths. But no, they all happen JUST off-screen, or quickly cut away from. Desperate for a 15 certificate?

Cash-in franchise bollocks. Oh, let's just turn out any old ****, people will watch it because of the name.

**** acting. THE KID JUST GOT IMPALED. He could at least pretend to be hurt.

Oooh... dramatic reveal that the Colonel is in fact... uhm, nobody. Yay.

It's not a music video... you're allowed to spend more than three minutes on a scene. Slow down, pace it... establish something... build some ******* tension.

Aliens can move about in plain sight without being seen now, can they? Around soldiers with night vision goggles who should be watching each others backs? [composite word including 'f*ck'] off.

Going to such great ******* lengths to hide all the aliens from our view. A glimpse here... a foot there. When they're the only thing in the scene? It's their sixth film! Don't ******* tease on it - we know what they look like. Visual effects producers turned directors, my hairy arse.

Why did the Predator go alone? Surely it makes sense to bring another in case he meets the same fate as the other? Crap. Sheer crap.

[composite word including 'f*ck'] right the hell off. With all of it.

Crap film. On every level. With no redeeming features. And nowhere near worth the time I've spent writing all that.

I may have to watch Once Upon a Time in the West as soon as possible in order to wash the taste out of my mouth.

Thats put it on rental for me - the Alien 1&2 films are classics beyond reason. If they ever want to get back to that sci-fi brillance then they will need a [composite word including 'f*ck'] load of cash, and either scott or ridley on board.

Nice to know I carry such influence. ;)

I genuinely want to know which idiot had the idea of "right, these action sequences take place mostly at night, often inside, during a power cut... obviously our Predator is a very dark set of colours, and the Aliens are black... so we'll compensate for the utter lack of lighting with some generic close-ups and lightning fast editing just to make damn sure nobody can follow what's going on. It's edgy! It keeps the viewer off balance! Whoo! We did the visual effects for T3, aren't we cool! Quick - somebody say 'get to the chopper'!"

I mean nobody expects a coherent plot or characterisation... the pacing and generic score killed any hope of tension... so it all comes down to the set-piece action sequences. That we can't see. Wonderful. First time directing, is it? Oh, what's that? Second? Well, fine.

But it doesn't ******* matter, because they've lifted a couple of sequences shot-for-shot from the other films, and one of the lead characters is called Dallas. So that more than ******* makes up for it.

Oh, and Michelle off of 24 carrying around the kid from Invasion looks a bit like Ripley and Newt. So ha ha ha ha ha. It's a reference, you see? It's self-aware! It's not **** at all.

*****.

I was just thinking about aliens 1&2 - both films start off with alot of talking amongst characters, it sets the scene up nicely. I find myself settling in for what I know is going to be a deep and involving story line.

So when a 'character' does die, I feel some sort of emotion. how come most sci-fi now fails to understand such a basic plot device as characterisation?

The prealien chucking the eggs did bother the crap out of me... first off because it made no sense, second because the fact it had to be pregnant women made no sense either and I thought it might have been that 'one step' too harsh for no apparent reason.

The best part of Alien vs. Predator was before the movie started I had some guy talking to me while I was waiting for my friend to come back with the popcorn about how much he loved the franchise and he was really big into the comic scene with it and I just sat there and nodded my head with a little 'I like Predators' every few minutes.
