Holy ******* ****!

I'm sure if Nick can write the hell out of rare European release toys, he can write Arcee.

TBH I think it'll be good to get her away from Barber, who still doesn't seem to have a handle on her character...

Ditto Prowl.

It would be good if he could somehow include Prime.

And Galvatron.

And Soundwave.

Lets face it, Barber's not my fave.

But not Spike

Very excited by this.

And the prospect of 5-6 months where we get this and MTMTE. Bliss.

My biggest problem with this isn't actually who's included in it, but who's missing from that cover...

Sweeeeeeet.

And I think I might actually prefer Costa and McCarthy to Barber.

Barber is a mediocre writer forced to roll with shilling for the toys. Even a good writer (Budiansky) had a lot of trouble with that.

My problem with Barber isn't so much the product-shilling - I thought that Combiner Wars was reasonably coherent despite all the shoehorning - it's more that his plots always seem to take ages getting anywhere and I'm never quite sure when they've arrived. MtMtE may be rambling but what Roberts gets right is that he hits his story beats almost perfectly, be they in a three-part epic or a "bottle show" standalone issue, which means that they're satisfying despite the longer-arcing plot threads going unresolved. But with the comic formerly known as RiD, we get... Prowl's up to something, Prowl's killing Decepticons, Prowl's crossed the moral event horizon, Prowl's massacring Decepticons, Prowl's up to something else, Prowl's gone gung-ho and still killing Decepticons, psyche - half of the Decepticons he killed aren't really dead, Prowl's joined the Decepticons, psyche - Prowl was under Bombshell's control the whole time, Prowl's an unwilling Constructicon, Prowl is freed from Bombshell's control, Prowl becomes a willing Constructicon, Prowl's up to something, Prowl's crossed the moral event horizon, Prowl's under the influence of the Constructicons, Prime and Prowl have a fight, Prowl teams up with Rattrap.

In storytelling terms, the only thing I can compare it to is a soap opera - Prowl's like the Phil Mitchell of the comic formerly known as RiD. I hope he falls off the wagon and starts doing crack again next.

So annoyingly accurate. To me, the sign of a weak writer is that they come up with a strong idea and never move on, shoving it in our faces over and over again as if to say "See?! Isn't it great?!" There's no subtlety. Prowl has been in our faces from day freakin one. On paper, I thought the idea of Prowlestator was a clever one. But Barber has taken a character that Roche built up to be one of the most intriguing in the entire IDW universe and butchered him. Same thing with Arcee. She's a very confusing character now that I can't get a handle on.

Bumblemeemissumus Prime does make a good point, to Barbers credit, but a competent writer should be able to do more with what he's been given.

Having said that, RID is probably targeted at a younger audience, so the problem may lie with my not being able to accept that. Were it not in the same universe and tied to MTMTE, I would have forgone it long ago.

I dunno, I don't get that from reading it--and some series, like the Dreamwave Energon series, that are explicitly aimed at kids, were much more enjoyable. Barber's just a writer with a few decent ideas and poor, poor execution.

Okay, so I've gathered one thing from this series so far.

That James Roberts, and not Nick Roche, was the writer on Last Stand of the Wreckers.

Don't like the story. Don't like the art, more specifically the muddled coloring. Dialogue wordy in a bad way.

I mean, it's not horrible but it's just not that good. Disappointed, as I was expecting something along the lines of LSOTW.

I think the difference is that on LSOTW, Nick and James were editing each other's dialogue with the result that it was much snappier and cleaner; this feels like it really needs an edit to maybe pare away some of the extraneous stuff. As it is, I find that it seems overly wordy for such an action-focused story.

What's most surprising is the art doesn't seem up to Roche's amazing standards either. Maybe it's the coloring. Maybe it's intentionally like that due to the Noisemaze stuff, but I find it very muddled compared to Roche's clean work of the past.

I think that James made Nick's dialogue crisper and generally gave the story more gravitas; Nick kept the action flowing and killed characters that James might not have been as eager to knock off.
