September's TF comic sales are in, courtesy of CBR:

http://www.comicbookresources.com/?p...ticle&id=41449

177 Transformers Regeneration One #83 11,288
181 Transformers Robots in Disguise #9 10,828
184 Transformers More Than Meets the Eye #9 10,705
193 Transformers MTMTE 2012 Annual 9,442 (@$7.99)
200 Transformers RID 2012 Annual 8,809 (@$7.99)

Total IDW TF Revenue September 2012: $276,781.28

The Annuals gave a nice little boost in a month with no trades, and sold pretty well considering the price.

Obvious drop in sales for the other singles. I think one can mistakenly interpret this as bad, but we should remember that these sales do not include digital sales, which I think since Autocracy are likely growing in number. Aren't some of you guys going the digital route already with some of these?

Been a while since revenue has cracked $260,000 for a month:

Though this was also the month the **** hit the fan over European and UK digital sales so those would have likely been hit fairly hard. Which is of course a large part of what makes that so frustrating, decent issues (especially the Annuals) kicked for an admin error.

It' would actually be interesting to see the consolidated (ie, IDW themselves, Comixology ect) digital sales figures to see how they compare to the physical. I'm actually surprised there's not such a chart already.

Ouch. Less than 10,000 copies, with regular titles such as My Little Pony, TMNT, G.I.Joe, Judge Dredd, Doctor Who, and Star Trek all outselling the Transformers. Can someone please explain to me why as the quality of the TF stories go up, the sales inevitably go down?

Costa's run had the same issue, regardless of quality. It's typical numbers fatigue. MLP, TMNT and numerous other comics are below 10 issues. Once you get up around 15, 20, 30 issues, monthly sales fall off considerably because of the amount of backstory. That doesn't mean that TPBs fall off, though.

Look for more crossovers, events, tie-in limited series, and the like over the next few years. Hopefully we can avoid the dreaded renumbering, in which someone decides that 33 issues is far too many.

Or have a glass full of spare change near their beds. That they don't have.

Didn't Ryall (may have been somebody else) come out online and say that the numbers were a load of ***** anyway?

The only exposure I have to sales is when I trek over to FP on release day.

Typically, there's multiple smelly BO ***** reading the book in the shop, with the book occupying a decent amount of shelf space but clearly selling out pretty quickly.

At Botcon, IDW said sales were great. I don't think there's any cause for concern. Just keep spreading the word. Buy issues for friends as gifts etc :-)

Odd how ReGen #0 DID increase sales - as I imagine that's partially the point of making #0 issues - but didn't make the next issue tick up one bit as compared to ReGen prior to #0.

Mickey Mouse? Jem?? Onyx??? Uncle ****** SCROOOGE???? All outselling Transformers.

At least Windblade rightfully selling the lowest, even below the animated comic.

In some European countries, Disney comics sell over 1 million copies *per WEEK*.

Edit: There are currently 9 Disney publications active in Japan. Most (all?) of which, if I'm not mistaken, outsell every comic book released regularly in the US.

Wow. Scrooge it is.

IDW is a clever lot. They really know how to run a company. I remember when all they had really was TF. Now look at them. Compare that to the train wreck DW. Either those guys were pisspoor managers, or they were theives. I think we know which.

A lot of folks don't know the half of it.

Dreamwave's early successes were *blatant* rip-offs of popular anime, namely Ghost in the Shell (Dark Minds) and Record of Lodoss War (Warlands).

They only got the Transformers license because they severely overbid on it. This was why they offered multiple (often connecting) covers (to get fans to buy at least two of each issue) and multi-tiered incentive covers (to get store owners to *order* more copies, knowing they could recoup their costs on the incentive, even if the individual issues were destined to be quarter-bin fodder).

Pat Lee (who refused to allow his name appear in print without "Superstar Artist" as a prefix like he was the flippin' Amazing Spider-Man or something) created and bought into his own hype, despite having a grasp on anatomy that would made Rob Liefeld look like Leonardo DaVinci, and not actually *drawing* most of the stuff his name appeared on.

That became more of an issue when other companies (Marvel and DC) payed Lee a *lot* of money to draw books like an X-Men cross-over, an Iron Man book, some Batman/Superman stuff, and a few issues of my beloved Spider-Man. He then farmed the actual work out to a few ghost writers and gave them a fraction of the money that Marvel and DC paid. Bill Finger got a better deal.

Even with genuine talent, multiple covers, pointless mini-series, ridiculous incentives, and other quick-fix cash-grabs, the whole thing went pear-shaped, seemingly overnight (but actually over the holiday vacation). This led to said genuine talent like Simon Furman, Don Figueroa, Guido Guidi, and more finding themselves unemployed just in time for the start of the new year. Unemployed, uncompensated for the work they'd done already, AND forced to pay for the artwork they'd mailed to the company to be returned, as Dreamwave refused delivery.

While all that was happening, Pat Lee and his brother made sure that the cars they'd bought with company money and the loans they'd taken out from their family were safe from litigation. They didn't lose a *dime* while everyone who worked for them (and, by the way, DEFENDED them, when folks like me started to point out that something smelled fishy with Dreamwave) were out thousands, or tens of thousands of dollars. They also transferred all of the (now) secure assets to a new company called Dream Engine, which went on to do absolutely nothing.

There are a lot of names that Transformers fans don't think too much of. But, when Transformers celebrates its 100th anniversary, the one that will continue to stand, above ALL others, as the most infamous name to ever be involved with the franchise, is... Michiyamenotehi Funana.

Floppies are dead. Digital & trades will tell another story, esp considering that the TF series are now in the upper 40s and far away from the buzz of early issues.

Or do one big poo in the morning and another one in the afternoon. I bet they weren't even excited by and then subsequently disappointed by Star Wars Prequels. Or have a glass full of spare change near their beds. That they don't have.
