It's like a lot of very minor very slow car wrecks.
It's like a bunch of people cheating and drinking themselves insensate while talking about how good everything is. Thank God for Netflix. Into Season 3 now. So far I have been spoilered on the fate of the Drapers' marriage. No other spoilers, please! Until I do it. Then it's okay. Another scotch, if you please.

I can see it's a real slow burn, but I couldn't really get on board with any of the characters. They're all jerks. I know that's kinda the point, but still... it's time I could be spending researching pornography...

Thought Season 5 was a bit too sudsy. Joan prostitutes herself, which, in my writing book, would have been better off in a "did she or didn't she?" scenario in which we're never sure. Lane's suicide was definitely sudsy. Hanging himself in his office? How much of a middle finger does he want to give his co-workers? I like this series because it's very much like typical drama--Chekhov comes to mind--and thus I'm more interested in slow burning stuff than any big twists. Roger on LSD was priceless, though. The Hallelujah chorus comes out of the whiskey bottle!

Laine trying to off himself in his Jag but not being able to because it (as Cooper said right from the off) won't bloody start was gold.
As I Facebooked at the time, season 5 gets forgiven for any flaws on the grounds that a) actual events occur and b) PETE CAMPBELL GETS PUNCHED IN THE FACE. |

Ha! I FB'd the same thing. Twice. Punched in the face twice. I jumped up and danced. The Jag thing was fantastic. I suppose that's why I found the actual self-hanging a bit of a letdown (eh? eh?) because I had seen the attempted suicide as the apex of Lane's character arc for the season. Thought he was going to fade away rather than burn out. I suppose it's better in the long run to have Lane actually die than vanish like Sal did: hey, here's this character you're invested in, caught in brutal personal conflict, about to do something that will wreck his life, now you'll never see him again! Also loved Hare Krishna Kinsey. So pathetic without all his pretentiousness.

Mad Men, eh? We watched an episode or two of it, but it didn't really grab me. I think we ended up watching Breaking Bad instead at that point. Although this..
...DOES remind me of a show we've just started watching that is similarly doused in critical acclaim - although with less cheating and drinking: Downton Abbey! It's nothing but minor very slow car wrecks and people either having it good or happy they don't have it worse. We're just into the middle of Season 2, so no spoilers as to who wins World War I, k?

What did we think of the ending, gentlemen and ladies?
