Threats of physical violence!

If the Ivory Tower is the brain of the board, and the Transformers discussion is its heart, then General Discussions is the waste disposal pipe. Or kidney. Or something suitably pulpy and soft, like 4 week old bananas.

Threats of physical violence!

Post by Jack Cade » Wed May 02, 2012 10:12 pm

Slightly less good news this week. How would you deal with someone sending you this on Facebook?:

"tell you what, i'll be in the UK in two months for business, why don't i look you up while i'm there we can have a discussion face to face. what's your address? actually, don't worry about the address, i was always very resourceful in the military, i'll find you. and as a "mild irritant", I'll break your ******* nose. see you in July, asshole."

Total stranger - this post followed a hasty and angry exchange because he's basically a bit of a Tea Partier. He followed up by blocking me, which bizarrely means that when I click the 'report this conversation' button it won't send Facebook a report.

Do I take it seriously? I figured out where the guy works and what company from sneaking a look at his profile from a different account. I could contact his company and ask them NOT to send him to the UK on business! But my housemate reckons there's a chance it might get him fired or disciplined, and then he'd really have a grudge.

He's just posturing, right?

Yep, macho posturing. I'd ignore it.

In the very unlikely scenario that he's actually serious, he'll be guilty of premeditated assault, and blah blah lots of other boring fun things.

Alternatively, screenshot the message, email it to somebody at Facebook. Or, y'know, his employer. His own fault. Sleep easy.

It's what I'd do. He's clearly not worth the energy worrying about it.

Just "my **** is bigger than your ****" macho nonsense. He's not going to use his secret military kill tactics to hunt you down.

What a clown.
For now, it seems like IDW wants my money.

Amusingly, me calling him a clown is what kicked him off!

I don't believe much in the secret military tactics bit, but I do think anyone could track down my address if they really wanted. Looking up site ownerships and that kind of thing. It would be amusing if got that far and was thwarted by the baffling and illogical layout of our flats though (we have one block that is one 'number' of the street, and an identical one opposite that is another number, neither of which are on the street that the numbers correspond to, and putting the postcode into a SatNav device reliably brings up a different address a couple of streets away).

I'd say report it to Facebook but if the link is disabled you'll be lucky to get any options :( mail it to his boss. F*** him.

reads like total BS.

He's gonna just turn up, assualt you in a foreign country and then.... what?b Get arrested and lose his job? Good plan.

I'd ignore it or drop him in it depending on what mood i was in - either way i wouldn't be worried.

If he meant it he wouldn't be warning you. That is all.

I used to get threatened a lot on Xbox Live (once very similar to this on PSO, lol it wasn't even on Halo or any PvP enviroment, he knew karate and would kill me and my children and wring my little neck. Being 6' 2" and 100kg I doubt it lol. Funny, I've still not heard from him to date, despite telling him to let me know when he got to Cardiff. Oh wait Karate dude I live in Holland now! lol), never took them seriously.

But if I knew where this guy worked, I would send a copy / screen shot of said threat and post it to his company. As said above, his own fault.
