Lost 2.20 [spoilers, blatantly]

Post by Brendocon » Mon May 08, 2006 9:57 pm

**** a duck.

I mean seriously.

So, Ana Lucia, Michael and "Henry" alone in the hatch, plus a gun. I figure somebody's going to get shot and it probably won't be Henry. I pray and pray that it's Michael, because he's done nothing but annoy me since the beginning of the first season... I know a lot of people dislike Ana Lucia, but if she were to accidentally kill ol' Mike, I'd love her long time baby. Only five dollah.

So, when Michael asks for the combination, a horrible thought crosses my mind. The sort of thought that comes attached with a "you know, if I were writing this and wanted to go for a complete out of the blue plot twist, this is what I'd do... but there's no way anybody would actually do that, it's too obvious a shock twist... if such a paradox exists" label attached to it.

I dismiss it as the product of all those years writing convoluted shock heel turns for the AWF. My brain is obviously just twisted.

****. A. Duck.

But that's not the shocker. I saw that coming. In that dismissive "no, they wouldn't" kinda way which always makes me half-expect it.

The bastards killed Libby.

The one member of the tail section people (barring Mr Eko) that I actually give a damn about. And so soon after the reveal at the end of "Dave", too.

Bastards.

Yeah, anyway. Obvious motivation for Mikey. Don't need to know why. Just hope he severed an artery and is currently bleeding out like crazy.

Must have stared at that blank screen for a full minute when the episode ended. And yet I must wait until Thursday evening.

DAMN YOU, GODS OF CAUSALITY!

Oh, and apparantly Desmond is back soon. Which answers pretty much my main gripe about the season so far. Yay.
Grrr. Argh.

Glad to hear I wasn't the only one...

I don't think Libby will die just yet, mind you. Yeah, I know, shot twice in the stomach, bleeding profusely, etc, etc...but I would be terribly surprised if she kicked the bucket before we found out why she was in the nuthouse with Hurley. Not that I particularly care if she dies, mind you...but the only reason I can think of for them to kill off the character without explaining her back-story would be contract trouble with the actress.

Killing off Ana didn't surprise me too much, although it worries me a bit. Considering how unpopular she is, I'm starting to worry that Abrams is starting to listen to the internet fanboys too much, like he did with Alias...not a good sign, if true.

Didn't really think Mike had the stones to actually kill anyone, although I suspected some sort of horrible betrayal was in the offing as soon as he popped out of the jungle after being gone for so long. Considering his ludicrously erroneous description of the Others' camp, it's obvious he's going to be doing his best to lead them into a trap. One would think that Kate would have realized how badly that conflicts with what she and Claire found in the medical hatch, and what Claire remembered about her time with the Others.

But it's Kate we're talking about...so they're all doomed.

Well, Ana-Lucia might've been killed of since she seems to be an asshole in real life (she got sentenced to five days in prison last week).

Libby held a pillow in front of her, so I bet we'll hear something like "Good thing you held that pillow in front of you! It saved your life".

Also: "WAAAAAAAAAALT!" ... "They. Took... My. Son!"
Gotta hate the annoying fool.

But: Why did Michael say "The Others are nothing compared to us. We can take them!"
Is he telling the truth, or is he lying? Hm.
Can't believe I'm still here.

Well, introducing characters with the sole purpose of killing them off is a practise that doesn't get enough action in my eyes... shock value. We never really learnt much about Shannon and Boone, either... beyond the basics. With Libby we don't even get that. I kinda like the fact.

I think it's more likely down to the problems Rodriguez has had... jail sentence palooza. Or maybe Ana was never meant to be in it longer than she has been.

One would think that Kate would have realized how badly that conflicts with what she and Claire found in the medical hatch, and what Claire remembered about her time with the Others.

Yeah, that flagged with me, too... but, thinking about it, the hatch had been abandoned so technically it may have been true. Plus Kate's got no reason to think he should lie... but you'd still reckon she'd say something. Daft bint.

I'm not so sure I'd agree with that.

One of the things I liked about the first season was that even fourth-tier characters like Boone got a fair amount of characterization and screen time. Not as much as the characters that actually mattered, naturally, but enough to get to know them.

There's been a bit less of that this year. With more characters in the cast, there's been less free time to play around with the bit-part characters. But even then, Libby's gotten short shrift so far...I mean, even Rose and Bernard got a flashback, and they're not even part of the main cast.

That's not to say that I was particularly looking forward to learning about Libby's backstory, but I'm inclined to wonder about two things. Why did we get that (totally non-surprising, IMO) Libby-Hurley revelation a few episodes back if they're not going to follow up on it? And why did the actress warrant anything beyond guest-star status when she was nothing more than window dressing for most of the season (aside from "Dave" and "The Other 48 Days")?

I think it's more likely down to the problems Rodriguez has had... jail sentence palooza. Or maybe Ana was never meant to be in it longer than she has been.

The latter is a distinct possibility...Michelle Rodriguez probably has a higher price tag than any two of the show's other regular cast members combined. I would have been surprised to see her on the show for more than a couple seasons no matter what had happened.

Plus Kate's got no reason to think he should lie...

After Ethan (and Goodwyn too, I suppose), I wouldn't take anything anyone said at face value.

Especially someone who just returned from two weeks alone in the jungle. Especially someone who already attacked two of our people, grabbed a gun and ran off. Especially someone who did all that, then returned unarmed, without bothering to tell us where his gun went.

For that exact reason would be my guess. Makes it more of a "surprise" if everybody's waiting around for an explanation on her character, and all we get is her being shot.

Still, she could always be not dead, I suppose. Have more dramatic impact if she were, though, I guess...

The Doyle Effect? Introduce a character, stick them in the main credits so everybody thinks they're safe... then kill them off as soon as people start to learn about them.

I remember hearing somewhere (and I've no idea how much truth is in this) that Sawyer was originally meant to be in the first few episodes, be really really nasty and then get killed, but they changed it because they like him. Again, no idea if it's true... but Libby could serve as a chance to do what they originally planned for Sawyer (albeit with "really mysterious" in lieu of nasty)

Plus Kate's got no reason to think he should lie...

True dat.

Maybe they just weren't expecting Michael to be capable of anything other than whining about his son...

Cynthia Watros, the actress playing Libby, just got the lead in a sitcom. Hence, no more Libby. It's rumoured that she'll appear in the series finale, though. TPTB at Lost claimed that Ana-Lucia was always going to be a single-series character, but also that they had planned a romance for her and Jack which didn't happen. A strange (but unrelated, they say) coincidence is that both Michelle and Cynthia have been done for drink-driving recently and this episode was called Two For The Road.

The next episode, titled ? should be a good one though - reports are that it's all about Eko and Locke :)

Hopefully it's called ? because they go to the bit on the map that's marked with a ? and not because it makes no sense at all.

Convenient how the list consists of the four people who were basically first on the scene, less the one who buggered off in the previous episode.

...especially given that the Others already had three out of the four people on that list in their clutches less than two weeks ago, and let them go. I'm getting the feeling that either the Others are making things up as they go along, or the writers are.

If the first option is true, that could rock...it would be nice to have bad guys who really don't know any more about what's going on than our 'heroes' do. Especially since most people on the Lost boards I've seen seem to think that the Others know everything that's going on everywhere on the island at any given time, orchestrated the plane crash, created the smoke monster, and are generally responsable for everything that happened to every character throughout their entire lives. It's always fun to see fanboys proven wrong, after all. :)

But if we have to go through door number two, then the show's probably going to disappear into a black hole of incoherent plots in the near future, like Alias before it. :(

[EDIT]And before I forget...Sayid does truly rock.

Here's my speculation about the four toes:

Penny's father is a member of a race of fourtoed aliens, he didn't want his daughter to marry Desmond who's a member of a race of 6 toed aliens. They might have horribly deformed children with 5 toes.

Not really, but I'm bored...

Some finale thoughts...

You know...I'm starting to believe Henry when he says that his merry band are the good guys. At the very least, it looks like the Dharma Initiative considered them "hostiles", which scores them quite a few points in my books.

This episode is going to be a big blow to the folk who thing the plane crash survivors arrived on the island as a result of some pan-global, Bond villian-esque superconspiracy. It was fate, I tell you! Fate! :D

But all in all...seeing Zeke (or 'Tom' now, I suppose...) rip off his fake beard was best part of the episode. ;)

That was ******* awesome.

The only way I could justify the whole "incident" and the button thing was some electromagnetic build-up that had to be manually discharged.

My overwhelming reaction the the whole Pearl thing was "how do they know that this isn't the experiment?"

I love being right. Especially when it's accompanied by the ************** awesomezor5.

I think everyone will be back next season, except possibly Michael and Walt. And no great loss there.

As for the finale, I was a bit annoyed that so much was left hanging - Sayid, especially - but there was so much good stuff on offer that it seemed like any more might have been overkill. I love the way that the show's also become this great romance story between Desmond and Penny - just in the course of one episode. The Widmore connection that has long been hinted at in the show looks like it's going to become pretty central in the third series...maybe old man Widmore is going to turn out to be Jack's cousin or something :) I did love all the fan nods in this episode though - the bird that said "Hurley", Sawyer's theories on who the others are, all the stuff that's blatantly referencing the Lost discussion boards.

My theory is that since Desmond's disappearance from the race three years ago, Penny has been trying to find him - she learned that there was a magnetic disturbance or something that threw him off course and paid the two Portuguese/Brazilian guys - maybe the same ones who discovered the phenomena in the first place - to detect and pinpoint it should it occur again. And now that we're seeing events in the outside world in real time for the first time since the series started, and also a time and date for the plane crash, the chronology of it is going to be very interesting.

I wonder if we'll see the whole Jack/Kate/Sawyer thing next season, or if they'll keep that under wraps for a few episodes.

Top theory on the Portuguese, El Rob. :)

Yeah, a key thing is whether we follow Jack et al, or if they treat their excursion into Othersville much in the same way they have done Walt's.

Apparantly season 3's gonna concentrate more on some of the other passengers, who up until now have been extras. Which will be nice.

Michael and Walt... would they just send them off without showing us what Walt's seen? All Michael needs to do is remember the "safe" bearing that he was given... sail back around to the beach with the other survivors, fill them all in on what's happened, mount TEH HEROIC RESCUEz0r5, and then set sail to safety!

Or something.

Dead interesting that Henry seemed to be in charge.

Oh, and I now think that Jim Robinson is "Him"

I've heard that the actor that plays Michael is only signed on for a guest-starring role next year, so I figure they'll be seperated from the main castaway group somehow. Wouldn't surprise me to see them get away from the Island and somehow end up helping Penny with her search.

I don't think any of the hatch crowd are dead just yet. Killing Desmond right after introducing the storyline with his girlfriend would be downright foolish. And if he's not dead, then Locke and Eko should still be alive. After all, Desmond was the one sitting on ground zero for whatever happened when he turned the key (or so it would appear, anyway). They could be in a bind, though...because if any of them got seriously hurt by flying debris, they don't have a doctor to patch them up anymore.
